PLM Vendor Advisory Services

A PLM Market Leader
In the early years of the 21st Century, John Stark Associates (JSA) has led the development of the new concept of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) - the business activity of managing a company's products all the way across their lifecycles in the most effective way.

2001
The October 22, 2001 issue of JSA's 2PDM ezine mentions how, driven by changes in the market and advances in technology, PLM was emerging as the way to develop, sell and support products in the Develop Anywhere, Sell Anywhere, Manufacture Anywhere, Support Anywhere (DASAMASA) environment.

2002
The name of the ezine was changed to 2PLM in the April 8, 2002 issue issue. By this time it was clear that Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) was becoming a strategic activity.

JSA provided one of the first estimates of the size of the PLM Market. The April 8, 2002 issue refers to a $16 billion PLM market size in 2001.

2003
The January 27, 2003 issue of 2PLM provided a broad outline of PLM under a What is PLM? heading.

2004
JSA's current definition of PLM is as follows : PLM is the business activity of managing a company's products all the way across their lifecycles in the most effective way. PLM manages each individual product across its lifecycle - from 'cradle to grave'; from the very first idea for the product all the way through until it is retired and disposed of. Managing a product across its lifecycle allows a company to take control of what happens to it. But PLM doesn't just manage one of a company's products, it enables the company's complete portfolio of products to be managed in an integrated way.

Many other PLM innovations appear in Product Lifecycle Management: 21st century Paradigm for Product Realisation, the most recent book of John Stark, President of John Stark Associates.

In the 20th Century
John Stark Associates was founded in 1991. It published the Engineering Data Management Newsletter from October 1991 to December 2003.

The Charter issue of the EDM Newsletter, describes how, in 1991, Engineering Data Management systems provided "a backbone for the controlled flow of engineering information throughout the product life cycle".

Publication of the 2PDM ezine started with the August 31, 1998 issue. The two PDMs in the title were Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Development Management (PDM). At the time, these were often addressed separately by companies, but they were becoming so closely linked that it was almost impossible to address one without addressing the other. For example, many of the workflows that PDM systems could manage were processes or sub-processes of Product Development. And many Product Development documents were managed in PDM systems.
