* Welcome * Welcome to 2PLM, an e-zine distributed about every two weeks. This issue includes :
According to a BBC news report of August 25 2006, "Toyota may have to delay the roll-out of some new models while it resolves quality control issues that have seen more than a million cars recalled. .. .. A report in the Wall Street Journal said the changes could delay some new models by up to six months." Details The announcement that Toyota, long considered one of the world's finest manufacturers, is facing delays in product development comes after the Sony battery recalls mentioned in the August 28 issue of 2PLM, the delay on the Airbus A380, mentioned in the July 17 issue of 2PLM, and the changes on the Airbus A350 mentioned in the May 22 issue. Without having inside knowledge of these companies it's not possible to know exactly why these problems are occurring. But, following the logic that has led to the emergence of PLM, it's almost to be expected that such problems would occur. Companies today are operating in a highly competitive 21st Century global market, and are trying to get more models of complex hi-tech products to market faster so they can better meet customer desires. That's not easy to achieve with 20th Century organizations and work methods. As all the problems are related to the product, one way to overcome them would be with a PLM Initiative. However, each company has its own culture and will solve its problems in its own way. From the comments of Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe, it looks as if Toyota will take its time to work out where the problems are coming from, what they are due to, and then take the necessary action to make sure they don't happen again. Meanwhile EADS, the parent company of Airbus, appointed a new CEO, and Airbus appointed a new CEO and a new head for the A380 programme. Ford Motor Company announced that it elected Alan Mulally as president and chief executive officer. Mulally has spent 37 years at The Boeing Company, most recently as executive vice president. In addition, he has also been president and chief executive officer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes since 2001. Details
