Enhancements will be required throughout the life of the CAD/CAM/CAE installation. In general, they should be user-driven and user-specified to meet well-defined requirements that provide real business benefits. It is only too easy to pursue CAD/CAM/CAE technology for its own sake without looking at the broader business picture and the benefits that can be realized. People with system responsibility will obviously have the most knowledge of the CAD/CAM/CAE system's capabilities and the available options, but it must be the users that define requirements and their priorities. Since most systems are based on providing a large range of options for creating and manipulating graphic data, it is very easy for users to get lost in the maze of options and techniques available and lose sight of the main task - product development and support. Scope This procedure covers the identification, review, and control of any enhancement to the CAD/CAM/CAE system, including both hardware and software. Contents The procedure should describe how all enhancements are reviewed, evaluated, and implemented. For software developments this should include the processes of defining requirements, preparing functional specifications, delivering the software within budget, and programming with proper project controls. For vendor-supplied hardware and software, the procedure should detail how upgrades are tested, accepted, and commissioned. |
