Naming convention procedure

All reference to CAD/CAM/CAE data by the system is made through names. If names are not chosen in accordance with some agreed convention, a large amount of information will be created that cannot be effectively used or referenced by any system user other than the originator. The importance of an appropriate naming convention, established at the outset, cannot be too highly stressed. Renaming a large amount of existing CAD/CAM/CAE data because the initial convention was not comprehensive or failed to consider all relevant aspects is both wasteful and likely to cause errors and loss of data.

Scope
The scope of this procedure is the naming convention that covers all CAD/CAM/CAE data from any source.

Content
The naming convention, which may well be an appendix to another document, should define a structure and a means by which a meaningful name can be assigned to any CAD/CAM/CAE data.
