Planning and initiation procedure

Scope
The steps required to plan and define how CAD/CAM/CAE will be applied to a given project or work area define the scope of this procedure.

Content
The definition of how CAD/CAM/CAE will be applied needs to be established, as well as its scope and place in the program of work.

Checklist
Check specifications and customer/project requirements. Do they need modifying to make the most of CAD/CAM/CAE? Consider where the CAD/CAM/CAE resource can be applied with most benefit. Identify any new procedures, training, software, or hardware needed for the work. Review the current standard data and, if necessary, program the production of new information to meet the production schedule. This will include reviewing:
  • Drawing frames
  • Library parts
  • Menus
  • Programs
  • Macros
  • Standard drawings and notes

Identify all CAD/CAM/CAE deliverables and their content. Identify key CAD/CAM/CAE milestones in the work program. These will be different from the milestones used with manual methods and may include items such as the completion of training, preparation of software, and perhaps commissioning of new hardware.

Prepare a CAD/CAM/CAE plan and set up monitoring and feedback processes to enable progress and system effectiveness to be established. Issue the plan and work to it.
