* Welcome * Welcome to 2PLM, an e-zine distributed about every two weeks. This issue includes :
by Roger Tempest The official Agenda for the PLM User Forum launch in Reading and Cleveland was very simple: start with an overview of PLMIG tools and material to set the scene; hold a discussion about the current state of the PLM industry, as a warm-up; then move on to delegate presentations on PLM implementation issues, so the user participants could discuss what they really wanted to talk about. The User Forum, after all, was a long-awaited platform for PLM managers to set their own agenda - to meet in a neutral location, decide for themselves which are the most important issues affecting their PLM progress, and then work on them together in a format that is detailed enough to produce results. Some of the results were taken away in the minds of the participants, because there is no substitute for watching a presentation of another company's implementation, asking questions and comparing notes with your own. The formal proceedings were compiled into a 28-page Summary Document covering business, technical and management issues; user needs for the direction of the PLM industry; and a new working framework for evaluating the commercial value of PLM. The question: "How does PLM measurably affect business performance?" eclipsed all others, and the generation by the delegates of the new metrics framework shows how powerful user collaboration really is. Participants in Reading decided that this was the subject they wanted to work on in the group sessions, and began to look for a way to break PLM down into components. Previous user collaboration (at the PLMIG PLM Maturity Workshop in Paris in 2006) had showed that PLM Maturity cannot be measured if PLM is treated as a complete entity, but can be assessed under 16 sub-headings or 'Axes'. The Reading group took these axes and worked on the first four (Strategy, Portfolio Management, Business Management, and Collaborative Product Development). They showed that, for each axis, PLM can be mapped onto commercial performance, and therefore that the framework as a whole will work. This has implications that go well beyond the User Forum series. If user collaboration for 2 days at an off-site meeting can achieve this, then how much would be achieved by companies that collaborated for a whole year on their ongoing implementation issues? This is the aim of the industry-wide PLM User Initiative that was covered in the 2PLM issues of December 1 ( Voice of the Users) and December 15 (Next Year's PLM News). To understand the PLM User Initiative one must first understand its scale - it is truly international, and far larger than anything that has been done in PLM before. The companies that have been involved in the consultation process are multinational corporations, often with more than 10,000 employees and Euro 1 billion sales value. For such companies, national location is a secondary issue. They are typically present in 30 or 40 locations around the world. They consider themselves as operating in a global environment, and this in itself is a major factor in the complexity of their PLM implementations. They would regard their counterparts as being other corporations of a similar size and global reach, rather than other companies in the same country. One of the great attractions of the User Initiative is that it allows them to collaborate with other PLM implementors who face the same complex range of challenges, and to do so at a depth and for a duration that can impact their success. It will be the first time that user collaboration has taken place in this depth, and the resulting new knowledge will be mapped directly into their ongoing implementations. If a 2-day workshop can lay the foundations for a system of PLM metrics, then a 12-month exchange of expertise can produce new tools and standards that every major implementation needs. The PLMIG will manage this process and produce the common working material so that collaboration is constructive and effective, and never becomes a net overhead. If you are implementing PLM at a user company then this represents the chance to share implementation methods and best practice with the only people with comparable expertise and challenges as you - other PLM managers and directors - and have the results blended with your working processes. The scope of the User Initiative will cover Europe and the USA, and may be ported to other regions. The major vendors are being consulted about sponsorship, and we are now looking to confirm the user companies that wish to be involved. If you feel your company might participate in the PLM User Initiative then write to userinitiative@plmig.com for a copy of the 8-page User Forum Overview document, which outlines the User Forum results. You can keep informed about, and interact with, the User Initiative through PLMIG membership via membership@plmig.com. Roger Tempest is co-founder of the PLMIG.
