by Scott Cleveland I joined a new group in LinkedIn called Business Process Management Professionals Group. A group member posed a question to the group. He points out that there is a lot of evidence pointing to the success of BPM activities around production processes and in companies providing services. But not a lot has been written about managing processes like conducting long range planning to improve efficiency, processes that are hard to measure. Most companies follow a process to create their long range business plans. Just like any other business process - if this is the first attempt at creating your long range plan to improve efficiency, then they may start with a process borrowed from experience. If this is their year 2 effort to work on the long range plan, they will likely start where they left off and make some changes because some things worked, some things didn't and things have changed since a year ago. It is unlikely that they attempted to measure the activities in the process in that first year. In the second year, they may have thought about measurements but were unable to establish any meaningful metrics. Our Thoughts... There is a process to creating processes. Many companies are attempting to apply six sigma principles to managing their process to create new processes. In the case of the process to create long range plans to improve efficiency, it may be difficult to define some meaningful metrics. However, you can certainly see whether a process step is helpful or not. If a step adds no value, then why have it there? The follow on question is whether to automate this process or not. I subscribe to the rule that if the cost of automating the process exceeds the value received from the automation, then don't do it. And my last thought - What a great idea, a long range plan to improve efficiency! Your Thoughts... Scott Cleveland is VP Sales & Marketing, Ingenuus Software.
