* Manufacturing Life-Cycle Management Demonstration Webinar, April 9 *
On March 12 2008, Eurostep held a demonstration of Manufacturing Life-cycle Management as part of the STEP T24 (Manufacturing) meeting in Sweden. This demonstration will now be held as a webinar on April 9. Afterwards, the webinar will be available for download at Eurostep's website. The demonstration provides insight into the life-cycle aspect of manufacturing, presenting the benefits of having a holistic view of the product realization process.

The demonstration includes information about:
  • Design of parts
  • Manufactured individuals
  • The process plan for the part and the actual manufacturing activity for the individual
  • Type of resource specified in the process plan, and the individual resource used in the manufacturing
In addition, a zonal breakdown is used to represent the structure of the plant and the individual resources located in a particular manufacturing cell of the plant. The resources also have observed states which makes it possible to show which resources that are available when the manufacturing is ordered.

The demonstrations shows how it is possible to see for a manufactured individual:
  • When it was manufactured
  • What the planned and actual time for manufacturing was
  • What resources were used
  • What the reported deviations were
  • Which resource was responsible for which deviation
If you are interested in attending the webinar, please contact Ulrika Peterson.

* PLM Project Preparation Problems *
A few weeks ago we spent a day with a company that had decided to look for a new PLM solution as its PDM application didn't work well. They wanted confirmation, or otherwise, from an external consultant.

It was soon clear both that there was little wrong with their PDM application and that they wouldn't need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a new PDM system. It was also clear that the company hadn't always taken the most appropriate decisions during implementation and use of the PDM application. That's not unusual. Successfully defining a PLM solution, selecting, implementing and using PLM applications is far from easy. The failure rate is about 50%. Problems can occur:
  • While preparing for a PLM project
  • While defining, in a PLM project, the future overall PLM solution
  • While detailing the PLM solution
  • During implementation of PLM applications
  • During everyday PLM activities after the PLM project
While defining the future overall PLM solution
While defining, in a PLM project, the future overall PLM solution, problems can arise from:

Starting with the Wrong Objective
  • The overall objective of PLM is to increase product revenues, reduce product-related costs, and maximize the value of the product portfolio
  • Starting the PLM project with any other objective is likely to lead to project failure
The Wrong People
  • Lack of top management / executive involvement and support
  • Lack of cross-functional involvement
  • Not involving an external consultant with knowledge and experience of preparing and implementing PLM
  • Lack of middle management support due to conflicts with personal goals and fear of loss of power
  • A PLM team that doesn't function as a team, but as a group of individuals, each with their own agenda
Planning
  • Making unrealistic plans
  • Not enough planning
  • Not planning sufficiently far forward
  • "In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable." Dwight D. Eisenhower

* PDM and PLM *
Andreas Lindenthal

To understand the terms better, it is useful to go back in history a few years. Until about 1999 the term PLM did not exist.

Before, everything that had to do with managing product data was referred to as product data management (PDM) or sometimes also engineering data management (EDM). Most PDM software vendors had their origin in CAD, CAM and/or CAE, and the main purpose of PDM systems was the management and control of the large and complex data structures of their CAD/CAM/CAE (CAx) systems. In 1999, the leading PDM systems included functionality for CAD data management, some document management, configuration/BOM management, revision control and basic workflow management.

Then the term PLM was introduced and quickly adopted by the majority of vendors, who saw the opportunity to position PLM as an enterprise application and differentiate it from the prevalent engineering and CAx data centric stance of PDM.

With the expanding scope of PLM over the past years this distinction has become more pronounced. Today the consensus is that PDM is focused on the management of CAx data, whereas PLM encompasses the enterprise-wide management of all product related data and processes from ideation to end-of-life.

But, depending on the origins of the different PLM vendors, their views differ in terms of whether PDM is part of PLM or not.

PLM vendors with origin in CAx, such as Dassault, PTC and Siemens (formerly UGS), whose PLM systems largely evolved from the PDM systems they initially offered, generally position PDM as part of PLM and consequently offer functionality to manage CAx data with their PLM systems via integrations to the various CAx systems.

PLM vendors whose origin is in configuration/BOM management, enterprise change management or ERP, such as Arena, Oracle|Agile and SAP, often promote managing CAx data with a PDM system that is part of the CAx system and then to integrate the PDM system to their PLM system.

Both approaches or solution architectures have their respective advantages and drawbacks, and it is important to analyze related processes and define detailed requirements and practical use cases to be able to decide which architecture is the better fit for a company's long-term needs.

* PLM User Initiative 2008 *
Roger Tempest

The Product Lifecycle Management Interest Group (PLMIG) announced the launch of a globally-based PLM User Initiative that will provide companies with a managed framework to interact and collaborate with each other throughout 2008.  The Initiative enables participants to combine experience and best practice, and to derive specific solutions to their own most important PLM problems.

The aim is to enable a group of companies to gain synergy from their PLM implementions, to generate and quantify a common set of PLM Best Practices, and to enhance the PLM implementation of each participant by focused application of the new knowledge, tools and metrics.

Pre-Registration Details
Pre-Registration is free, and includes the creation of a concise PLM Profile.  As the collected Profiles will be circulated amongst the Pre-Registrants for discussion, this will give an interesting comparison of a number of different, real PLM implementations. There is no obligation to take part in the Initiative after the discussion phase.

The PLM Interest Group
The PLM Interest Group is a neutral, independent industry body for PLM. It has no geographical restrictions on membership or activities. The aim of the PLMIG is the advancement of Product Lifecycle Management and its related disciplines by combining the experience of organisations across the whole industry. Membership of the PLM Interest Group is open to : manufacturers ; product and service providers; developers of PLM and related technologies; vendors and distributors ; system integrators ; consultants ; research institutes ; industry associations ; standardisation bodies ; government agencies ; academia.

* BPM Initiatives *
Scott Cleveland

BPTrends performs many surveys during the year. I found these results worth discussing ..

53% use process modeling and analysis tools
38% use business process automation software
61% are actively pursuing departmental process improvements
45% have active process improvement projects in place
And, 36% have a dedicated business process practice group or a center of excellence

A couple of their conclusions:
  1. About one quarter of all companies responding have been able to leverage early BPM success into repeatable programs.
  2. Companies with a center of excellence are far more successful than those without.
More here.

Scott Cleveland is VP Sales & Marketing, Ingenuus Software.
