* Welcome *
Welcome to 2PLM, an e-zine distributed about every two weeks. This issue includes :
  • Ten Steps to the Single BOM
  • PLM Framework: Development and Benefits
  • PLM News
* Ten Steps to the Single BOM *
  1. Understand that the design objective is to provide effective documentation for manufacturing
  2. Manufacturing and planning participate in the design process
  3. Document the bills of material into the manufacturing database
  4. Use the master schedule to show design status
  5. Start "As-Planned" early in the design process
  6. Document the design for manufacturing the first time out
  7. Use the Single BOM to capture drawing numbers and revision status
  8. Use the Single BOM to maintain the "As-Something" status
  9. Use the Single BOM for customer and/or Government reporting requirements
  10. Use the Single BOM as the catalyst for engineering/manufacturing integration

* PLM Framework: Development and Benefits *
Before Product Lifecycle Management emerged in about 2001, companies implicitly managed products across their lifecycles, but they didn't do this, even conceptually, in an explicit, "joined-up" way. Because it wasn't done explicitly, things fell through the cracks:
  • Decisions weren't coordinated
  • Risks weren't fully analyzed
  • Information got lost
  • Customer requirements were misinterpreted
  • Time was wasted
  • Key relationships were ignored
Although, at first glance, it may have appeared that everyone in the product innovation, development, manufacturing and support chain was doing their work correctly, behind the scenes many problems occurred. Problems such as:
  • Developing products that didn't meet customers' requirements
  • Missing market windows because of slow product development
  • Releasing designs with dangerous flaws to manufacturing
  • Ignoring design alternatives
  • Not doing enough prototyping and testing
  • Not adhering to standards
  • Taking decisions informally, and making changes informally
  • Losing, misunderstanding, and ignoring information
  • Entering, and re-entering, data for Bills of Materials (BOMs) manually
  • Wasting huge amounts of effort, time and money looking for information
  • Wasting time searching databases to find data for reports
  • Having conflicting data in different data sources
  • Having difficulties managing outsourced and offshored functions
  • Letting design and engineering departments work in isolation
  • Not providing salespeople with product availability data
  • Not making customer complaint information available to developers
  • Creating CAD models and BOM files that are not in agreement
  • Having difficulties managing market life extensions of mature products
Such a list of problems is not much use when trying to work out how to implement and benefit from PLM. The main message it conveys is that there are a lot of problems. However, it's not easy to see if, or how, they are related, what they are due to, or when they occur. Many of them are related to one or more of the following: products; data and documents; processes; applications; methods; facilities and equipment; people; organizational structure. All of these are components of PLM, but it may not be clear how they are interlinked or relate to the problems.

By bringing together previously disparate and fragmented activities, systems and processes, PLM has the potential to overcome the many problems that resulted from the old unconnected approach. However, companies developing and supporting products worldwide need a PLM Framework to help organize their product-related resources, and to visualize, quantify and communicate their PLM activities. Without such a Framework, many of the members of a PLM Project Team, and many users of PLM, will find it difficult to understand the benefits of PLM.

Chapter 6 of "Global Product: Strategy, Product Lifecycle Management and the Billion Customer Question" (reduced price promotion on Amazon.com) shows how to develop and benefit from such a framework.
