In 2005, ISO published a new international information standard, ISO 10303-239 Product Life Cycle Support, specifically designed to address the requirements for information sharing throughout the product lifecycle.

The PLCS information model enables open information exchange and necessary data consolidation of the large information set required to deliver efficient support across the product lifecycle.

Product data have complex inter-relationships, reside on many different IT systems, are owned by many different parties and are subject to continuous change. They may have a lifecycle of minutes, or may need to be managed for decades.

The key concept of PLCS is the creation of a "single source of truth" - concerning assured product and support information - for use across the enterprise. The information will necessarily be created in many different IT systems - CAD, MRP, ERP, LSAR, and Authoring Tools, etc. - so, in order to realise the concept in full, it is necessary to consolidate the information set by explicitly linking related items.

PLCS provides a mechanism for exploiting, throughout the product life, the investment made in well-structured product data during the design phase. The key lies in establishing a capability that can access and manage the total information set appropriately. This is achieved by creating and sustaining an "Assured set of Product and Support Information (APSI)" for support delivery and optimization.

PLCS provides a means of breaking away from the current way of managing product data and simplifying the re-use of product information. PLCS provides a means of achieving integration within and between organizations whilst, at the same time, reducing user dependency on specific software vendors through the use of a neutral and international product-data standard.

To grasp the potential benefits that PLCS offers your organization, you may want to extend your understanding of the PLCS information standard and learn from implementations already made.

PLCS

Eurostep will be running PLCS training courses in Paris, France between the 19th and 21st of February. There will be a 1-day Executive Overview and a 3-day Technical Walkthrough.

The 3-day Technical Walkthrough includes individual exercises in which participants use a specially designed tool to create examples of product structures, activities, and requirements, to improve their understanding of the standard and learn how it can be used. By attending this training, attendees will prepare themselves for exploiting PLCS and putting it into effect in their organizations.

The one-day Executive Overview of PLCS focuses on the business benefits of implementing PLCS. Both courses present examples of implementation of PLCS in several different organizations.

For more information about these courses, please visit www.eurostep.com/training or contact ulrika.peterson@eurostep.com (dir tel +46 8 4101 3151).

* Product Portfolio Management *
When we carry out a review of a company's Product Development performance, we often find:
  • too many projects relative to the available resources. As a result, projects are staffed with fractional resources.
  • a lack of consistency between the evaluation methods used to value projects. Different managers develop and use different types of business cases, making it difficult to compare projects and to identify their relative priorities.
  • product developers who are very good at developing new technology, but less good at focusing on projects that will create business value for the company. Often, they keep poorly performing projects alive long after they should have been killed. These projects continue to eat resources that could be better used on more valuable opportunities.
  • about half of the development projects are terminated before commercialization, even though significant resources have already been invested in them.
In these circumstances, with corporate objectives demanding more for less, there is a widespread desire to improve the overall return on the investment in product development and improvement projects. Executives want to be sure that their product development resources are focused on the best set of projects. They want to be sure that these projects are aligned with business objectives.

Product Portfolio Management offers the promise to meet these targets. It helps:
  • analyze, evaluate, prioritize, select and manage the mix of projects for Discovery; Product Innovation; Product Improvement; Process Improvement; Technology Exploration
  • balance resources, risk and return on investment
  • align projects with corporate strategy
  • maximize the value of the portfolio
But where should a company start? A good approach is to benchmark Product Portfolio Management activities in other companies to identify best practices. A company can then estimate its improvement potential, such as to reduce project cycle times by about 45%, and increase successful project completion by about 30%. Another potential target is to be able to compare the value of each project in the portfolio, so that executives have clear visibility of the situation and can make informed decisions.

Chapter 4 of Global Product: Strategy, Product Lifecycle Management and the Billion Customer Question results from discussions with executives in companies of different sizes and in different industry sectors about different components of PLM, including Product Portfolio Management.
