* Valuable Multiple Executive Views of PLM *
PLM is the enabling technology for Global Products, manufactured products that:
  • Can be purchased and used worldwide
  • Are maintained and supported worldwide
and have probably been:
  • Developed and engineered in many locations
  • Assembled from materials and parts manufactured in many locations
For many companies, Global Products have only become a reality in the last few years. Such companies have little experience in managing products across the world, throughout their lifecycles. Not surprisingly, it can be difficult for them to develop a PLM strategy and implement corresponding processes and applications. If they base their future activities on the existing situation within their own company they may develop an incomplete or biased picture. Their current company environment may result from very specific circumstances or the actions of specific individuals. Its PLM status may be far behind that of the leading deployers of PLM.

Fortunately for such companies, though, a lot can be learned about PLM by studying and analyzing what other companies are doing. That was the approach taken for Chapter 4 of Global Product: Strategy, Product Lifecycle Management and the Billion Customer Question.

PLM is the business activity of managing a company's products all the way across their lifecycles, from the very first idea for a product all the way through until it is retired and disposed of, in the most effective way. Chapter 4 results from discussions with executives in companies of different sizes and in different industry sectors about different components of PLM. It illustrates the different situations of different companies and the complexity of the product environment.

Contributors included:
  • Thomas W. Schmidt ; Group Vice President, Head of Information Systems ; ABB Power Products Division
  • Ruedi Klein ; Product Portfolio Manager ; Mobility Access business unit, Lucent Technologies, Inc.
  • Uwe Tontsch ; Head of ITD, Information Technology - Product Development and Industrial Engineering Solutions; BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeraete GmbH
  • Eric Peeters ; Executive Director ; Sealants and Adhesives, Core Products Business, Dow Corning Corporation
  • Luis Cediel ; CEO ; Habasit AG
  • Heinz-Simon Keil ; Director of the Virtual Engineering Centre ; Siemens AG
The resulting 42-page Chapter, 'Global Products: At the Coalface', shows many facets of PLM, and highlights the value of exploring different situations, relationships and connections in examples from other companies.
