* PLM - between the Business Opportunities and the Applications *
By John Stark
The delegates at the recent PLM Summit in London included:
  • some, in greenfield situations, starting out on the PLM Road
  • many, with long experience in CAD and PDM, now wanting to go much further down the PLM Road
Companies in the latter category typically have executives looking for bottom line results and other business benefits from PLM. However, it can be difficult and time-consuming for a PLM Project Team to translate high-level business strategies and needs into corresponding actions such as implementing PLM software, improving processes and training product developers.

Often, in an early stage of the project, executives will ask the Project Team about the ROI of PLM. However, the ROI depends on many variables such as the business benefits targeted, the level of investment and the PLM concept that is most appropriate for the company. These will all be known at the end of the project, but not in early stages.

We advise PLM Project Teams to follow a Ten Step Approach to PLM:
  1. PLM Status Review, Data Gathering
  2. Executive PLM Education and Awareness
  3. Best Practice Positioning
  4. PLM Concept Generation and Analysis
  5. PLM Roadmap and Plan Generation
  6. Business Benefits and Business Case Development
  7. ROI Calculation
  8. Management Report Preparation
  9. Executive Presentation
  10. Executive Decision Support
Experience shows that these ten steps help in understanding where PLM can be applied to a business most effectively, in getting the answers required by executives, and in getting executive approval for the PLM initiative to proceed.

The ten steps make it clear to everyone involved what has to be done, with clear deliverables at each step to show what has been achieved.

The Ten Step Approach is a tried-and-tested methodology that has been used in many companies, at different stages of PLM progress, in many industries.

One company with which we applied it had already started a project to select and implement a PLM solution. However, as the size of the potential benefits became clear, the Project Team and executive management saw the value in asking for external assistance to validate the findings and identify potential risks. The 10 Step Approach quantified a realistic ROI. A risk management approach was identified and implemented.

Executives in another company wanted to understand and quantify the different options that had been suggested with 2D and 3D CAD, PDM, workflow management, BOM Management, product development process improvement, and a new development methodology. The 10 Step Approach showed that there were three main options, and highlighted their different costs and benefits. In particular it showed that the benefits of the low-cost option would be negligible, yet the other options would require significant management involvement. This led the company to appoint a PLM VP to drive the PLM initiative forward and achieve maximum benefit.

In another case, the company had identified the need for a PLM solution, and initially wanted help with identification and detailing of different PLM concepts. The 10 Step Approach highlighted related issues and led into support for selection and implementation of the corresponding PLM applications.

* Configurator Software Selection: Is it Different? *
By Dick Bourke and Marty Browne
Yes, in many respects. Most likely, many readers are familiar with software selection for an enterprise resource planning (ERP) or product lifecycle management (PLM) system. There are many common characteristics in the selection process; for instance, the need for a focused team representing the key functions of the company and the need to state explicitly the business requirements as criteria to evaluate software.

In configurator software selection, however, there are some significant differences: configuration logic is not "Out-of-the-Box," it can be complex and the product/part relationships, called product models, can be defined in different ways. A recognized best practice is that users, not programming personnel, must be able to create and maintain the product models.

The potential users must fully understand the range and depth of product modeling capabilities before signing a contract. The risk of selecting the "inappropriate" software is too great. The implication is clear: either a highly tailored demonstration or better yet, a vendor Proof-of-Concept is a necessary step in the evaluation process.

The wide-wide range of choices is another significant consideration. Most ERP and PLM vendors have their own configurator software. There are numerous third party sources. There are products integrated with computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as SolidWorks and Autodesk's Inventor. Caution: many of the third party sources are small and privately owned.

The moral: if a third party source appears to be a valid alternative from a capabilities viewpoint, then exercise an extra level of due diligences in reference checking, extent of customer base, vendor ability to support, and analysis of financial viability.

The "appropriate" selection can only be determined within the context of the individual company's Future State ("To-Be") configurability strategy.

* Global PLM 2007 Survey *
The Global PLM 2007 Survey is a survey of the status of PLM practice and thought in manufacturing and engineering companies throughout the world in 2007.

The current number of responses is about 80% of the required target. As a result, we are extending until August 2007 the timeframe of Part 1 of the survey.

Participant feedback is that the questionnaire for the first part of the survey takes about 10 minutes to answer. More details here.
