* Welcome * Welcome to 2PLM, an e-zine distributed about every two weeks. This issue includes :
by Phil Cooper "PLM systems are okay for the aerospace and automotive companies - but we're not in those markets" "We only bring out a couple of new products a year - why would we want to use PLM?" "PLM - it's just ERP under another name isn't it?" These are just some of the comments I hear from the managing directors of smaller companies, SME's, that are looking to improve the profits of their company in an increasingly competitive business environment and facing greater customer expectation and demands. For the smaller company the acronym PLM unfortunately seems to have become synonymous with large complex software packages, expensive licensing, computer aided everything, collecting mountains of data, protracted installation timescales, big servers and even bigger IT departmental budgets. It is not surprising therefore that PLM in this guise is seen as a problem to diligently avoid rather than a new opportunity to use a powerful tool that will generate more profitable products and services. Their business is not about implementing the features of a specific supplier's PLM offering. Whilst it is clear that IT infrastructures, data warehousing and product data management systems form important elements of an effective lifecycle management policy, it is also apparent that, as with many software solutions, a company needs to question existing practices and establish suitable and practical philosophies, processes, functional and personal interactions to avoid just getting the "wrong answers faster". However, the philosophies and concepts behind effective product lifecycle management are as sound for the small company as they are for the Fortune 100 corporation - yet the implementation steps are probably very different. The SME has many advantages over the large corporate which they will already be using for leverage in the marketplace, including shorter, faster lines of communication and information flow, tighter functional links as well as greater flexibility of services and product offering. The reverse side of the coin frequently sees restrictions on investment and capital expenditure, people or skills limitations, poor IT infrastructure and fragile, ad-hoc processes that have appeared as the company has developed. The analogy of a chain, The Product Lifecycle Chain, which is only as strong as the weakest link has proved useful. Initial implementation steps are usually targeted at identifying where the weakest link is currently in the small company's overall business product strategy and operations. Introducing product lifecycle management philosophies and tools to the small company managing director does make sense, but it must be shown to help them achieve their business goals more effectively and continue to enhance their core advantages whilst addressing the limitations that might restrict the financial performance of the business.
