* From PDM to PDM/PLM to PLM *
Many companies discover Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) as a result of looking for a Product Data Management (PDM) system.

Initially, the company sets up a PDM project team to select the PDM system. Often, the driving force is the need to manage data generated by mechanical Computer Aided Design (CAD) applications. The team identifies several suitable applications, but finds it difficult to make a business case for PDM. Although the costs are easy to quantify, the financial benefits aren't. Things get even more difficult when team members find the CFO won't accept an investment if the payback time is longer than a year. They may also find that other executives assume data is already being managed, so don't see the need to spend money on PDM software.

The project team looks deeper and finds, for example, that:
  • Much of the product data expected to be managed in the PDM system is product definition data created in mechanical CAD and Collaborative Product Development (CPD) applications used for product development. This data is not easy to manage. There's a lot of it. It has many structures. More and more products are customized. Data management needs to take account of many versions and variants.
  • There is also product data generated in other applications such as electronic CAD, wiring layout, Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), analysis, simulation and tests. And there's product feedback data from the field.
  • Some of the product data to be managed is software for mechatronic products, and needs Software Configuration Management (SCM) as well as PDM.
  • Some product data is already being managed in an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) application.
  • Much of the product data originates in product development projects. These projects follow processes such as New Product Development and New Product Introduction. Getting control of the data implies, to some extent, improving these processes.
  • There is a methodology (such as Stage and Gate) for the projects. Making best use of product data implies, to some extent, implementing the right methodology, and using it the right way.
  • Projects that lead to new or modified products are part of the portfolio of product development projects. Effective management of the Product Development Portfolio is difficult if product data is out of control.
  • Product development projects are intended to meet customer requirements. Managing the product data in the projects implies, to some extent, managing customer requirements and related product specifications.
Having started off looking for a PDM system, the project team finds the project scope ballooning to include CAD, CAM, CPD, SCM, ERP, Product Portfolio Management (PPM), process improvement and Requirements Management. At this time, team members read Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realization. About half of this 440 page book is about PDM, half about PLM. Team members begin to see that, as well as product data, there's another common theme to their work - the product. The various applications and processes that have found their way into the project scope address the product at different times in its lifecycle.

The project team reasons that PDM shouldn't be seen as a standalone issue to be justified only on the basis of improvements in data management productivity. PDM underlies many revenue-generating activities throughout the Extended Enterprise. The product data managed by PDM is created in a business process, and is used in that, and other, business processes. It's in those business processes that the financial benefits of better management of product data will be found.

The project team tries to decide if the objective of the project was to address PDM as a CAD file manager, or PDM as a part of PLM. The team realizes it should consult management about this, reads Making Progress With PLM, and prepares a presentation for executives.

During the presentation, team members suggest to executives that the project scope should be expanded to PLM. They explain that the objective of PLM is to increase product revenues and the value of the product portfolio. The executives give the go-ahead to the team to look at PLM, and report back with candidate plans, costs and benefits. Team members want to understand as much as possible about PLM. They read the PLM State of the Art 2006 Report. They organize PLM Workshops and go to conferences about PLM. They learn about PLM implementation methodologies such as The Ten Step Approach to PLM. They contact a consultant to help develop a PLM Strategy and implement PLM successfully.

 European PLM Summit 2007

* Participate in the Global PLM 2007 Survey *
The Global PLM 2007 Survey is a survey of the status of PLM practice and thought in manufacturing and engineering companies throughout the world in 2007. More details here.

The survey is expected to run from April to July 2007.

Participant feedback is that the questionnaire for the first part of the survey takes about 10 minutes to answer.

* European PLM Summit 2007 *
The 3rd European PLM Summit, to be held in London in June 2007, will highlight the business and technology imperatives behind PLM adoption, and show how to design, develop and deliver blockbuster new products that maintain the competitive edge.

Hot topics include:
  • PLM in the global company: driving down time to market across borders
  • Key success pointers in PLM integration and drawbacks to avoid
  • Processes and people as key factors behind PLM
  • Driving growth across the business
  • PROMISE: the next generation in PLM development
