* Welcome * Welcome to 2PLM, an e-zine distributed about every two weeks. This issue includes :
by Roger Tempest "Try before you buy" - wouldn't it be nice if you could do that with PLM?. There are many things that cannot be tried out by the customer before purchase, ranging from consultancy projects to bespoke suits, but at least with a made-to-measure suit of clothes the deliverable can be clearly defined. The difficulties in defining PLM, its progress and its benefits are well known, but experience within the PLM Interest Group has shown that these can be worked around. If you bring together a group of PLM practitioners, all of whom understand PLM, then they can work together very effectively without needing a written definition of what PLM is. This shows that the main problem, therefore, is not definition but understanding. You may understand PLM and the way in which it could be developed within your company, but how can you convey this understanding to other people? PLM requires the involvement of managers and directors throughout the enterprise, many of whom will not understand the subject and may have little motivation to try. If you are to move forward then you must reach the state where everybody who needs to know about PLM has a common picture of where you are and where you can go. It was clear from the European PLM Summit held in London in June that there are two barriers to achieving this common understanding. For large, experienced companies the issue is the sheer complexity of PLM, and the volume of working material (plans, documentation, consultancy output) that has been generated as the implementation has developed. The perception of PLM can become very project-focused: "We have done these projects, and this was their outcome"; rather than enterprise-wide: "This is our view and Vision of PLM, and the projects supported it in this way." Mature PLM user companies need to be able to take a step back and discuss their PLM in a concise, standard format. For new adopters, the difficulty lies in how to understand their PLM situation and how it can be developed. There is a lot of general information to be found, but it is not tailored to the real organisation that they actually work in. In order to get something that is specific, and relates to their own company, they currently have to commit to some kind of external advice. This can be a good step forward, but if they feel forced to do so before they have a good understanding in their own minds then there is always an element of doubt about the results. The answer is to be able to assess your PLM environment for yourself, without requiring external advice. If you can understand your own PLM situation, generate a common picture that is agreed throughout your company, and review and confirm your plans, then you know you have a good platform for moving forward. Your PLM aims and direction will have been validated, and you can be confident that you are using the right mix of internal and external support. Continuing its role of generating openly-available PLM knowledge, the PLMIG has developed the PLM Self-Assessment Toolkit to enable you to do this. The Toolkit uses a standardised methodology that guides you through your own "internal consultancy" process to generate an overview and discussion platform for your current PLM situation by means of peer review. It follows principles that have been proven in real PLM benchmarks, but is lightweight enough for you to carry out the Self-Assessment without having to do a justification for the time and resources involved. Carrying out your own assessment of PLM removes the lingering doubts that can exist when you are always fed information by other people. You may well be going in the right direction already, but at least you can now be sure. And when you use external material or advice, you can be confident that you have made the right choice. More information about the PLM Self-Assessment Toolkit is available on the PLMIG's web site or by email.

Details Aviation Week & Space Technology reported that "Airbus officials say poor design tools were a main cause of A380 delays. Problems with the Catia digital mock-up led to inaccuracies. Williams says the computer tool didn't represent the wiring harnesses well and, because there wasn't always good configuration control in the database, some design changes were not properly reflected and remained undiscovered until problems during wiring installation were encountered".
