* Welcome * Welcome to 2PLM, an e-zine distributed about every two weeks. This issue includes :
Ralph Grabowski's upFront.eZine is always of interest, and the July 4, 2006 issue was no exception. In an article called '4DV Replacing PLM -- The Next Big Thing?', Ralph wrote "I've expressed my loathness of acronyms like BIM and PLM; still, I want to be first with 4DV". 4DV is .... integrating CAD with 4D virtualization, where:   4D = 3D + Time.   Virtualization is physics-based, animated 3D rendering of CAD models. The article asks, "I wonder if 4DV will be the acronym-du-année that replaces PLM, which has had a pretty good run but faces its own EOL (end of lifecycle)." Maybe 4DV will be ADA ("acronym-du-année"), but it's unlikely that PLM, the business activity of managing a company's products all the way across their lifecycles in the most effective way, will reach its EOL this year. PLM helps companies get products to market faster, provide better support for their use, and manage end-of-life better. In today's highly competitive global markets, companies must meet the increasing demands of customers to rapidly and continually improve their products and services. PLM meets these needs, extending and bringing together previously separate fields such as Computer Aided Design, Product Data Management, Sustainable Development, Digital Manufacturing, Enterprise Resource Planning, Life Cycle Analysis and Recycling. Each one of these approaches provides benefits in some areas - but not in others. PLM brings these approaches together to get all the benefits and, as is often the case, the whole is more than the sum of the parts. Recent events have shown how PLM can bring benefits for companies with products as different as soft drinks and airplanes. * Coca-Cola and Information Protection * In an Executive Office Memorandum about the recent trade secrets investigation, Coca-Cola's Chairman and CEO Neville Isdell wrote, "Information is the lifeblood of the Company. As the health of our enterprise continues to strengthen and the breadth of our innovation pipeline continues to grow, our ideas and our competitive data carry increasing interest to those outside our business. Accordingly, I have directed a thorough review of our information protection policies, procedures and practices to ensure that we continue to rigorously safeguard our intellectual capital." * PLM and the Security of Intellectual Capital * According to 'Making Progress With PLM', a manual to support PLM initiatives and PLM projects, Security & Intelligence is one of the 12 components of PLM. The Security & Intelligence section starts, 'PLM provides security in the face of increasing global competition and the potential risks from terrorism and economic espionage. Product information is an increasingly valuable resource for corporate development and must be kept secure.'. If your company's PLM Initiative doesn't address security of product information, such as recipes or CAD files, get the manual here. * Vision of PLM in the Company in 2010 * Many companies would benefit from developing and communicating a "Vision of PLM in the Company in 2010" as outlined in 'Making Progress With PLM'. Such a Big Picture including, for example, a description of the many components of PLM, helps everyone in the company understand what PLM, the business activity of managing products across their lifecycles, from cradle to grave, will look like in the future. It will help everyone, whether engineer, marketer, shop floor worker or business executive, to understand and prepare for PLM. * Delay on the Airbus A380 programme * Gustav Humbert, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Airbus SAS, announced his resignation from his position with immediate effect (Details). Commenting on his decision, he said: "The recently announced delay on the A380 production and delivery programme has been a major disappointment for our customers, our shareholders and our employees. As President and CEO of Airbus, I must take responsibility for this setback and feel the right course of action is to offer my resignation to our shareholders." * Benefits of PLM for the CEO * According to 'Making Progress With PLM', a manual to support PLM initiatives and PLM projects, 'The benefits of PLM are seen differently by different executives. At the highest level, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) gets visibility over the products and is in control. The CEO knows the value of the Product Portfolio and can see how it will evolve. The CEO can make decisions based on reality, rather than guesses. Costs can be reduced as activities that do not add enough value become more visible. It's easier for the CEO to take account of potential risks.' If your company's PLM Initiative hasn't informed executives about PLM's potential for increased visibility of product development progress and for reduced risk, get the 'Making Progress With PLM' manual here. * Lean and Portfolio Seminar with Robert Cooper * Dr Robert G. Cooper, world-acclaimed guru, researcher, author and mentor to companies, will be leading a 'Lean Rapid and Profitable Product Development and New Product Portfolio Management' Pure Insight seminar on September 18-19 2006 at the Marriott Renaissance Heathrow, London.
