* Welcome * Welcome to 2PLM, an e-zine distributed about every two weeks. This issue includes :
The 2nd Annual European PLM Summit 2006, held 26-27 June 2006 at ExCeL London maintained the high reputation this event earned in 2005. It was another successful event with delegates appreciating the high level of presentations, expertise of the speakers, networking opportunities and vendor presence. From the product and service provider side, the Key Sponsors were Adobe Systems Inc., Dassault Systemes, ENOVIA MatrixOne, Infosys, Oracle, UGS. The Sponsors were Agile, Artemis, Lascom, SAP, Tata Consultancy Services, xPLM Solution GmbH & Co. KG, Wipro, Zuken. The Exhibitors were CAT Alliance, CD-adapco, Dizain-Sync, DSC Software, Seemage, TESIS PLMware GmbH, Vistagy. There were more than 30 speakers from a wide range of industries and organizations including Airbus, Alenia Aeronautica, Beiersdorf AG, BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeraete GmbH, Dell, GM, Harris Corporation, Kongsberg Automotive, Meyn Food Processing Technology B.V, Serono International, Unilever and Volkswagen AG. Compared to last year, the Summit showed that there is now a much greater understanding of PLM and its potential. However, there are still many unanswered questions. One of these concerns the best company organizational structure for PLM. The functional organization doesn't fit well with PLM. Product-line and matrix organizations seem more appropriate. PLM and Innovation Another question concerns the link between PLM and Innovation. 2006 has seen strong growth in the number of words written and spoken about Innovation. It's become one of the hottest topics for corporate executives. However, what's hot is not always safe to grasp, and we caution the companies we work with to be very careful with their innovation-related activities. The scope of Innovation is so wide that the subject is difficult to address, and it's even more difficult to address in parallel with a PLM Initiative. Often, management expectations for innovation and PLM are very different, and there's a real danger that a project addressing the two projects will meet the expectations for neither. Yet there seems to be a close connection between PLM and Innovation. More than 50 years ago, Schumpeter proposed that innovation drives growth, and with the objective of PLM being to increase the value of the product portfolio, there is clearly overlap. However, there are many facets to Innovation and many components of PLM, so great care has to be taken in preparing an Initiative that addresses them both. It's easy to get the wires crossed or to lose sight of an important requirement. The Ten Faces of Innovation looks as if it will be the most-widely read book about innovation in 2006. It gives readers a people-focused view of Innovation that is complementary to the commonly found application-focused view of PLM. Reading it could help you understand just how carefully you need to approach innovation and PLM initiatives. PLM Glass Ceiling Another subject of discussion was the PLM Glass Ceiling. This keeps many PLM projects at the level of departmental projects, or projects focused on only one aspect of PLM, and prevents them from maturing into holistic, enterprise-wide PLM projects. Companies looking to break through the PLM Glass Ceiling will find the PLM State of the Art May 2006 Report and the Making Progress With PLM Manual helpful. Both are now available with telephone and/or Web support. |
