* Welcome *
Welcome to 2PLM, an e-zine distributed about every two weeks.

* The PLM Paradigm *
A paradigm is a logical or conceptual structure serving as a way of thinking within a given area. Within the area of product management, PLM is a new paradigm. With PLM, the organization manages the product in a coherent joined-up way across the lifecycle.

PLM is also a new paradigm, a new way of looking at the world of products, in that PLM is a holistic business activity addressing many resources such as products, organizational structure, working methods, processes, people, information structures and information systems. PLM recognizes the relations between these, and acknowledges that they all have a role to play in managing a product.

Before PLM, the paradigm was atomistic - not holistic, and resources were considered as separate and disparate. Often they were seen as "belonging" to individual departments of the organization, rather than to the overall product lifecycle and the result was an Alphabet Soup of many unconnected applications, processes and practices.

In the PrePLM environment, before the emergence of PLM, the paradigm for managing a product across the lifecycle was the Alphabet Soup of many small activities, each of which managed a product at a different moment in its life. The PLM paradigm sees PLM as one major business activity.

In the PrePLM paradigm, each of the many small activities had technical objectives - not business objectives. PLM has business objectives.

The PLM paradigm has a focus on the product. In the PrePLM paradigm, the nearest equivalent would be a focus on the customer.

The PrePLM paradigm assumed a departmental company organization. The PLM paradigm assumes an organization focused on the product.

In the PrePLM paradigm, organizations didn't manage products in a joined-up way across the product lifecycle. For example, product development and product support were often carried out in different parts of the organization even though they addressed the same products.

With PLM, the organization manages the product in a coherent joined-up way across the lifecycle. PLM brings together what was previously separate - for example product development and product support.
