Presentations on the second day include:
16.00 PLM in the future - developing and managing PLM models, Roger Tempest, Co-Founder, PLM Interest Group, UK, who will discuss the current status of the PLMIG's PLM Benefits Reference Model (BRM) project.

* One-Day PLM Benefits Workshop *
by Roger Tempest

The Goal of the PLMIG's BRM project is to establish a comprehensive, quantified, practical and agreed Reference Model for measuring and comparing PLM Benefits. This will lead to an industry-standard frame of reference to answer the question: 'What benefits should my organisation expect to achieve through PLM?'.

The benefits of such a model include :
  • a strong foundation for management decisions about PLM
  • saves time in identifying where PLM can have an impact
  • makes it easier to communicate about PLM
  • gives a neutral view of the PLM situation at different sites in a large corporation
  • helps companies measure their PLM effectiveness
  • highlights ways to improve PLM performance
The first two Launch Workshops for the project, held in London, England and Boston, MA, produced a wealth of new knowledge about how PLM Benefits can be identified and structured. This has been detailed in two 19-page Summary Documents. The project is now moving forward, with discussions underway for the next Launch Workshop.

Meanwhile, for companies that were not able to participate in the London or Boston workshops, but that would like to understand and make use of the Benefits Reference Model findings, a 1-day Workshop is available. This shows their current position in the context of the BRM framework and includes an interactive work-through of their specific PLM opportunities.

The morning session covers:-

- Background to the Project
- Current Situation of PLM Benefits
- Detailed Frameworks from London and Boston
- Different Approaches to Moving Forward
- The Company Situation

This creates the basis for everyone to share a common view of where PLM Benefits lie. The afternoon session is interactive, with:-

- Group Discussion of PLM in the Organisation
- Existing Drivers, Capabilities and Processes
- Mapping to London and Boston Frameworks
- Working Session to define Status and Next Steps

Please contact the PLMIG for more details.

* Viewpoint: Volvo Car's Bertil Turesson on PLM *
In the first edition of the Viewpoint column, Gahl Berkhooz (Ford Motor Company's Technical Leader for Systems Engineering and Product Creation Information Complexity Reduction) invited Bertil Turesson, PLM Strategist, Volvo Car Corporation to give his perspectives on PLM. Bertil has a historical perspective dating back to the introduction of 3D CAD, through the development of CAD data management and PLM at Volvo, while at the same time being a part of the evolution of "PLM theory".

Bertil emphasizes PLM as a holistic business approach with aspects of Process, Methods, Information, and Tools, as well as the importance of corporate culture as determining the success of PLM initiatives in corporations. Viewpoint

* Cost and Value of a PLM Initiative *
by John Stark

The cost of a PLM Initiative varies greatly from one company to another, depending on factors such as size, industry, supply chain position, etc. The typical range of costs for different sizes of company is :
  • Small : tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands, of dollars
  • Medium : hundreds of thousands, or millions, of dollars
  • Large : millions of dollars .... to billions of dollars
It's relatively easy to calculate the cost of a PLM Initiative. It can be more difficult to calculate the value. Yet the principal objective of PLM is to increase value. Often, the value will be estimated at the beginning of a PLM Initiative, and then forgotten about as implementation activities take front stage. However it's important to update the value to take account of implementation results. Demonstrating the value that has been achieved will help keep the Initiative moving forward. On the other hand, if the calculations show that the Initiative isn't providing the expected value, then remedial action may be needed.

A PLM Initiative is likely to be costly, risky and run for many years. Independent neutral information and advice can help increase the chances of success and reduce the costs and risks. The latest seminar/workshop from John Stark Associates, Next Steps For Your PLM Initiative, has a customizable format so that it can help whether you are preparing for your initial PLM Initiative, or are looking to take an existing PLM Initiative further.

Next Steps For Your PLM Initiative can be presented as a one-day seminar in nine parts, or in a more interactive Workshop format focusing on selected areas. It can be presented on your site or as a series of live Web Seminars. The nine parts of the standard seminar are:
  • Introduction to PLM
  • The Main Components of PLM
  • Principles, Benefits and Metrics of PLM
  • The PLM Initiative
  • PLM Concept Generation
  • ROI and the Business Case
  • PLM System Architecture/Functionality
  • Next Steps in PLM Implementation
  • Future Challenges in PLM

Other resources to help with your PLM Initiative:
* Enron verdicts, Sarbanes-Oxley, Compliance, PLM *
In December 2001, after admitting accounting errors that inflated earnings, Enron Corporation filed for bankruptcy protection. Arthur Andersen, one of the world's leading accountancy firms, was found guilty of shredding key documents. In July 2002, WorldCom filed for bankruptcy after $11bn of accounting irregularities were uncovered. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act, signed into law in 2002, introduced harsh penalties for anyone found guilty of corporate wrong-doing. (From 'Product Lifecycle Management', 2004. Details)

In May 2006, a federal jury found former top Enron executives Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling guilty after more than 14 weeks of testimony. Details

Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Section 1102: Tampering With a Record or Otherwise Impeding an Official Proceeding
Makes it a crime for any person to corruptly alter, destroy, mutilate, or conceal any document with the intent to impair the object's integrity or availability for use in an official proceeding or to otherwise obstruct, influence or impede any official proceeding is liable for up to 20 years in prison and a fine. Details

PLM is the business activity of managing a company's products all the way across their lifecycles, from the very first idea for a product all the way through until it is retired and disposed of, in the most effective way. Huge volumes of documents and data are created and used during the lifecycle. Product Data Management (PDM) and Engineering Document Management applications are part of PLM.

Sarbanes-Oxley requirements on document management, and other Compliance requirements, have helped get PLM on the corporate agenda. This was demonstrated by a recent Google search on "Sarbanes-Oxley" "Product Lifecycle Management" which yielded 897,000 results.

* Sustainable Development, PLM *
The relationship between Sustainable Development and PLM was described in 'Product Lifecycle Management', 2004. Details

Sustainable Development was defined as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" by the Brundtland Commission in 1987. It's a holistic concept that aims to unite economic growth, social equity, and environmental management.

Sustainable development and related ecological/environment activities represent a major business opportunity. There are many activities across the lifecycle that can help achieve sustainable development targets. They include : reducing the quantity of energy and materials used ; reducing the quantity of energy and materials wasted ; finding new ways to re-use materials ; finding new ways to recycle material ; improving the energy-recovery rates of incineration ; improving landfill productivity. Aiming for sustainable development often implies a 90% reduction in the use of new resources during the lifecycle.

In May 2006, Autodesk launched its Sustainability Center Website. Details

PLM is a holistic, joined-up approach to the management of products across the five phases of the product lifecycle (imagine; define; realize; use/operate/support; retire/recycle). Sustainability issues arise in each phase. Many PLM applications, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), PDM and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), support Sustainability.

* PLM: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realization *
'Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realization' is the book that introduced the holistic, joined-up paradigm in which PLM is the activity of managing a product throughout its lifecycle - 'from cradle to grave' - making sure that everything works well with the product and making sure the product makes good money for the company. PDM, Sarbanes-Oxley and Sustainable Development are all included in the paradigm, along with Portfolio Management, CAD and others.

Since its publication in 2004, the concepts of PLM have been further developed. For example, the objectives of PLM are now defined as:
  • to increase product revenues
  • to reduce product-related costs
  • to maximize the value of the product portfolio
Where should you be now with PLM? What should you be aiming for? What will PLM look like in 2008? To keep abreast of the latest advances in PLM thinking and practice, read Making Progress With PLM and the PLM State of the Art May 2006 Report.
