Benefits of PLM
One of the issues that has to be addressed in a PLM project is the identification, quantification, justification and communication of PLM benefits. This usually raises questions such as :
  • What are the benefits of PLM? How many types of benefit are there? Where are they? Who gets them? When do they come?
  • Why is it important to identify PLM benefits? How are they identified? Who identifies them? How are they validated? How are they quantified? By who? When? Who validates? How? When? How long does it take? What are the risks?
  • How many approaches are there for identifying, quantifying, validating, communicating, reviewing, auditing PLM benefits? What are best practices?
  • What are the risks of home-made PLM Benefits approaches? How can they be avoided? How can cross-functional agreement be achieved? What about cultural differences and issues? How can top-line business benefits be identified? How can soft, indirect benefits be avoided? How can CXO and VP agreement be achieved?
If you are faced with such questions, you'll benefit from attending a workshop about the benefits of PLM to be held at the end of February.

PLM Benefits Workshop in Boston
The PLM Interest Group (PLMIG) announced a PLM Benefits Workshop to be held 28 February - 1 March 2006 in Boston, MA.

The Workshop is the first in a series of international Workshops to be hosted by Founder Members of the PLM Benefits Reference Model (BRM) Project.

The objectives of the Workshop are:
  • to achieve an in-depth understanding of the current situation with PLM benefits. This situation is driving the need for a PLM Benefits Reference Model
  • to prepare the plan for the next steps of the project which will lead to an internationally accepted PLM Benefits Reference Model
The Workshop will enable participants to:
  • learn more about the PLM Benefits Reference Model Project
  • learn about the current situation of PLM benefits; understand the potential benefits of PLM; understand the reasons why identifying, quantifying and justifying PLM benefits can be so difficult
  • find out how other companies address the issues of PLM benefits
  • participate in the only industry-wide initiative addressing PLM benefits
  • make sure the Project is aware of their specific issues
Workshop Details
This Workshop is being organized with the assistance of PTC (Needham, MA), one of the Founder Members of the BRM Project. It will be held 28 February - 1 March 2006 in Boston, MA. Details

The next Workshop in the series is being organized with the assistance of UGS, another of the Founder Members of the BRM Project.

Innovation through PLM. Innovation of PLM.
In the Chinese calendar, this is the Year of the Dog. For others, it seems to be the Year of Talking about Innovation.

After talking about innovation, the next step should be to innovate, and for many industrial companies the strategy is clear - Innovate through PLM.

This 21st Century strategy is based on an innovation in PLM that first appeared in 2004 in Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation Details.

In this innovative new paradigm, PLM is seen as the business activity of managing products holistically across their lifecycle with the objective of increasing the value of the product portfolio. Apply PLM, achieve Innovation.

Market-leading companies that are following a strategy of achieving Innovation through PLM have found that they need a PLM framework to help visualize and position their current PLM situation and identify next steps for PLM implementation. The PLM Grid and the Six Levels of PLM that were outlined in a recent issue of 2PLM are being developed to meet this requirement for a PLM framework. The PLM State of the Art January 2006 Report includes more information. Details

Education, training and other support services are available with the Towards PLM 2006 service that assists manufacturing companies with implementation and use of PLM in 2006. Details
