* Welcome * Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. * Progress of the PLM Benefits Reference Model Project * The PLM Interest Group (PLMIG) announced it is making good progress with the launch of its collaborative multinational project to develop an industry-standard Benefits Reference Model for PLM. The project is currently in the start-up phase, with many potential participants looking to see how they can best participate. However, one major PLM vendor is already "95% sure" of participating. Two other vendors and a large manufacturing company are "over 50% sure" of participating. It's generally recognized that this is a 'win-win' project that will help everyone involved in PLM - users, product vendors, service providers, academics, etc. People from all parts of the PLM World agree that the Model will save time when identifying the benefits in each new PLM situation, make it easier to communicate about PLM, and provide a rigorous basis for management decisions about PLM investments. According to some companies that are currently running PLM initiatives, the availability of a PLM Benefits Reference Model would reduce the time to identify and agree on a solution by more than 20%. As well as reducing project cost by a similar amount, they would hope to get the benefits of PLM correspondingly sooner. With a widely disseminated Model and reduced time-to-solution, PLM vendors would be able to quantify leads better and book sales revenues sooner. Reducing the sales cycle by 20%, for example from 10 months to 8 months, and reducing the effort for a particular potential customer by 20%, for example from 5 man months to 4 man months, could help reduce costs and increase revenues. The PLMIG's proposed project aims to develop a Reference Model for the Business Benefits of PLM. It is seen as complementary to the efforts of TC 184/SC4 (PLCS AP 239, etc.) which are focused on standardization in the area of technical data. More information is available on the PLMIG's web site at www.plmig.com and from Roger Tempest of the PLMIG.
