* Welcome * Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. * NASA and PLM * After the mention of NASA and PLM in the July 18 issue of 2PLM, one reader told us we shouldn't criticize NASA, and asked if we had ever sent a rocket to the moon. Another asked what we thought NASA should do next. A few quick answers. a) No, we haven't sent any rockets to the moon. b) The intention was not to criticize NASA, but to look at publicly-announced events at NASA in the context of PLM. c) Not knowing any details about what is happening inside NASA, we don't know what NASA should do next. By the way, the text resulted from overhearing a "talking head" on television mentioning a 2% risk. Whether that was a specific risk for Discovery was not clear, but the figure didn't go away. Where did it come from? What was the basis? Why was it being broadcast now? Any company that claims a 2% risk rate for its products would be considered as having very low quality. They would be considered an ideal candidate for PLM. One of our conclusions from working with many companies involved in product development and support is that they share many similarities, even though they may be in very different sectors and of very different sizes. This may be because they are all working in a similar political and economic environment, and have received similar education about business and management. Whatever the reason, they have similar behavior, similar problems, similar symptoms, similar causes, similar effects. In the area of product development and support, the similarities are such that a profile can be established of a typical company in need of PLM. It could include (Source) :
In the 21st Century, the paradigm for product development and support is Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). This is a holistic approach to management of products across the lifecycle in the Extended Enterprise environment. Companies with the above characteristics should look to PLM for a solution. By the way, the same day that Discovery lifted off, another talking head on television said something along the following lines "space travel is a risky business. If air travel was as risky, there would be 560 plane crashes every day". From a PLM point of view, it looks as if many of the problems with NASA's products (Challenger, Hubble, Mars Orbiter, and Columbia) were not related to the difficulties of space travel and rocket science, but to the organization of product development and support. For example, in 1999, NASA's $125 million Mars Climate Orbiter was lost because a contractor's spacecraft engineering team supplied information about propulsion maneuvres in Imperial units to the navigation team which was using metric units. As mentioned above, the intention is not to criticize NASA, but to look at publicly-announced events at NASA in the context of PLM. Perhaps the conclusion that other organizations should be drawing from these events is that unless they implement PLM, the 21st Century paradigm for product development and support, they will be faced with poorly performing products and the likely consequences. And most shareholders don't accept a 2% failure rate. |

The RoHS regulations that go into effect July 2006, require electronics companies to provide proof that they have complied with regulations limiting the amount of six hazardous materials, including lead, in their products. Today, these materials can be found in the components, fabrication of the PCB, and in the assembly parts. Component suppliers are being asked to document the material content of their parts in data supplied to the OEMs. By adding this material content to the component library data and flagging parts that are RoHS compliant, OEMs can ensure that their designers have the information they need to make the proper choices.
