Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis.

* Review of PLM in the First Half of 2005 *
Overall, the world of PLM had a good first six months in 2005.

The world of PLM vendors
Revenues of most PLM vendors and service providers increased.

Several vendors announced new rounds of funding, for example,
  • Arena Solutions : $15 million
  • Centric Software : $33 million
  • QUMAS : $10 million
The most noticeable feature of the first half of 2005 was the relatively high level of acquisition activity:
  • Agile Software Corp. : Cimmetry Systems, Inc.
  • Autodesk, Inc. : COMPASS systems GmbH
  • Dassault Systemes : ABAQUS Inc.
  • PTC : Polyplan Technologies Inc.
  • UGS Corp. : Tecnomatix Technologies Ltd.
  • INCAT : CAD Potential, Inc.
  • Delcam : Engineering Geometry Systems
The world of PLM users
On the user side, ten important trends were visible in the first half of 2005:
  • PLM is expanding from one or two phases of the product lifecycle to the complete product lifecycle
  • PLM is evolving to a holistic approach (with acknowledged relationships between elements such as processes, data and applications) from an atomistic approach (with elements considered as separate and disparate)
  • PLM is increasingly seen as a strategic business activity rather than as a departmental technical activity (such as an Engineering IS activity)
  • the new paradigm of PLM is gaining general acceptance
  • a product lifecycle of five phases (imagine, define, realize, support, retire) is becoming the norm
  • business executives are taking more interest in PLM as they increasingly recognize its importance in generating additional revenues from new and existing products
  • user companies are looking to join up and bring together PLM elements across the product lifecycle
  • the scope of PLM is expanding beyond the individual company to the Extended Enterprise
  • the focus of PLM is moving from product data to the product
  • user companies are launching initiatives to ensure they achieve the potential benefits of PLM
Details of the "PLM User Trends - 2005" seminar/workshop.

Vendor response
In response to trends among users, PLM providers are acquiring companies to fill gaps in their product and service portfolios, and to expand their PLM footprint.

This is creating many challenges for vendors:
  • technical challenges of integrating products with different architectures and overlapping functionality
  • organizational challenges of bringing together different management and operational structures
  • marketing challenges due to multiple and overlapping brands, products and services
  • management challenges of running a different type, size and complexity of company
  • sales challenges of selling business solutions to top-level executives rather than licenses to technical managers
The world of PLM publications
A new book about PLM, "Product Lifecycle Management beherrschen : Ein Anwenderhandbuch fuer den Mittelstand", was announced. Details
"Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation" retained its leadership position. Details

Among ezines, upFront.eZine and 2PLM continued to be widely read.

* Making Progress with PLM in 2005 *
Anyone faced with the task of launching a PLM Initiative, or developing a PLM strategy, knows the difficulties involved. Where do you start? What's the scope? When do you address ROI? What are the IS applications of PLM? How should a PLM Initiative be organized? How should the PLM activity be organized?

Making Progress with PLM in 2005 is an electronic publication designed to help manufacturing companies launch PLM Initiatives and develop PLM visions and strategies. It's built on experience gained in many such projects, and benefits from on-going contacts with organizations around the world in the process of implementing or improving PLM. It takes account of the latest global trends in PLM strategies, deployment and use.

Making Progress with PLM in 2005 provides, in a well-structured and concise format, knowledge and experience that will boost PLM project activity and enable faster deployment. Initially released in May 2005, it is now at Version 1.2 and includes a PDF document and a PowerPoint presentation.

Making Progress with PLM in 2005 enables companies launching a PLM Initiative, or developing a PLM strategy, to avoid reinventing the wheel. Instead, starting from an existing generic framework, they can invest their effort in activities that correspond to their specific organizational needs. Details
