* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. Unusually, this issue of 2PLM asks you to reply to a few questions. They are on the subject of PLM Strategy. But first, a few words of explanation.

* PLM Strategy Development *
Since the beginning of this year, many of the contacts arising from 2PLM (which has over 8,000 readers on the mailing list) and our web site (which has over 1 million hits per year), have been directly or indirectly related to PLM Strategy. From these contacts, it seems that many organizations are in the following type of situation:
  • They have run numerous performance improvement projects, for example, to implement many applications (such as CAD, PDM, ERP, etc.), define their business processes, create a Quality Manual, take on board approaches such as Concurrent Engineering and QFD, etc.
  • In spite of all those projects, they have a very visible problem related in some way to one or more of their products, and they try to solve this problem with another project (e.g. an ECO project)
  • When they start looking at the details, they see the problem doesn't have a clearly-defined stand-alone scope, but involves several processes, several applications, several departments, etc.
  • They realize that what is really needed is some kind of overall joined-up PLM approach that addresses the problem in a wider context of many applications (CAD, PDM, PPM, etc.), processes (ECO, NPD, etc.), techniques (collaboration, etc.), interfaces (to ERP, SCM, Enterprise Content Management, etc.), ..
  • They look round the organization for someone to lead an initiative in this area, and find that, after all the downsizing and outsourcing, nobody has the time to do it
  • They look outside the organization, and are quoted over $50k by consultants for a PLM Strategy
  • They don't have $50k in the budget, and discuss if they really should spend $50k on a voluminous report, or on licenses for a new application
  • While thinking about this, another product-related problem raises its head, and gets their attention
  • When they try to solve the second problem, they see it doesn't have a clearly-defined stand-alone scope, but involves several processes, several applications, several departments, etc.
  • They know that what is really needed is some kind of overall joined-up PLM approach
  • They look round the organization for someone to lead an initiative in this area, and find that, after all the downsizing and outsourcing, nobody has the time to do it
  • Etc.
It might appear that lack of funding and lack of people would make it impossible to get out of this situation, but from what we see, there is generally a small budget available for contingencies, and it's usually possible to find someone to work on an important subject provided that the required effort isn't too high.

Seeing this situation several times led us to look for an alternative that provides the same results (PLM strategy, detailed plan, report, presentation, etc.) as traditional methods, but at 20% of their cost and effort. This eventually led us to start developing a knowledge- and experience-based approach to developing a PLM Strategy.

* Three Questions about PLM Strategy *
Your answers (Yes or No) to the following questions would help the development of the PLM Strategy Generator. They will be considered as confidential, and not communicated to any third parties.

Q1. Do you expect an overall PLM Strategy (addressing multiple components - such as applications, processes, techniques, interfaces, data, - across the product lifecycle) will be of use to (or needed by) your organization before the end of 2006?

Q2. When your organization decides to develop its PLM Strategy, will lack of resources (e.g. key people already overloaded, funding not foreseen in budget) slow it down?

Q3. If your organization is developing, or planning to develop, a PLM Strategy (or if the situation described above looks familiar), would you like to know more about our knowledge- and experience-based approach to PLM Strategy generation?

Please send your answers to John Stark. Thank you in advance for your participation.

* PLMIG News *
Among the events planned by the PLMIG in April 2005 are:
  • April 20. PLM Best Practice Forum. Paris, France
  • April 27. PLM Research 2005. Gothenburg, Sweden
  • April 28-29. SCM/PDM/PLM Workshop. Gothenburg, Sweden
* PLM Research Meeting, Gothenburg. 27 April 2005. *
Due to the wide scope of PLM, it will be difficult for individual researchers to make a significant impact unless they are part of a larger research initiative. This meeting, which is being held at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, will enable PLM researchers to create such consortia and develop proposals in response to the EC's FP6 September 2005 PLM Calls.

* PLM Best Practice Forum, Paris. 20 April 2005. *
The PLM Interest Group has an objective to define PLM Best Practice 2005. Without Best Practice, companies waste time and money implementing and using PLM. This meeting is organized in partnership with the FPDMUG.

* PLM and Software Configuration Management Workshop. 28-29 April 2005. *
Many products contain tightly integrated hardware and software components. Yet PDM systems (used to manage the data defining the hardware components) and SCM systems (used to manage the evolution of the software components) appear to exist in different, separate worlds - creating problems for people managing products with tightly integrated hardware and software components.

The objective of the PLM/SCM Workshop in Gothenburg is to identify:
  • current experience with SCM/PDM
  • the major issues associated with PLM/PDM/SCM
  • currently available implementation approaches
  • ideas for future solutions
For more information about participating in these events, contact Roger Tempest.
