* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis.

* To-PLM Map *
Recently several of our customers have asked for some way to position their PLM activities.

In response we developed a To-PLM Map for them. This is a map which shows them where they currently are in terms of PLM, and helps them see how they can make progress to more complete lifecycle management of their products. The latter part of the previous sentence can also be written as "how to get to PLM", "how to achieve PLM", or "how to implement PLM".

The basis of the map is the 3 x 3 matrix, or window, shown below. Before describing the contents and their positioning, a few words about the axes. The horizontal axis shows the span of an initiative (such as CAD, PDM or PLM) across the product lifecycle. Up the vertical axis are the number of components (such as processes, applications, standards, techniques, etc.) addressed by the initiative.
  • In the first column are components that occur primarily in one department or function. A typical example is CAD, which is found primarily in the Design function.
  • In the second column are components that occur in two or more departments or functions - but not across the complete product lifecycle. A typical example is CAD/CAM which is found in two functions (Design Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering).
  • In the third column are components that occur across the lifecycle. A typical example is PDM which is found in functions across the complete product lifecycle (e.g. Marketing, Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing, Service, Recycling).
  • In the top row are initiatives that are holistic - addressing all the components. Product Lifecycle Management is holistic, which is why it's at this level. PLM addresses processes, human resources, information, techniques, applications, etc. across the product lifecycle - which is why PLM is in the third column.
  • In the second row are initiatives that address two or more, but not all, components. Collaborative Product Development fits here, and because CPD involves two or more departments (in different companies) it's in the second column.
  • In the third row are initiatives that primarily focus on one component - such as applications. CAD fits here - in the first column as it's only in one function. CAD/CAM fits here - in the second column as it's in two functions.
PLM is the business activity of managing products across the lifecycle. It is achieved with many components such as: applications (e.g. CAD, PDM, portfolio management), processes (e.g. new product development process, engineering change process); methodologies (e.g. phase/gate); standards (e.g. ISO 14000); techniques (e.g. Value Analysis, Life Cycle Analysis); etc.

The To-PLM Map helps companies position their current PLM components, identify missing components, and define the way forward to PLM.

The To-PLM Map, and other ways of achieving PLM, will be discussed at the PLM Interest Group (PLMIG) meeting in Zurich, Switzerland on May 26, 2004. Details.

If you have a view about the way to PLM, and would like to participate, please contact Roger Tempest.
