- Welcome Page 2 - Update Page 3 - News Page 4 - Brief lines | Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. It contains the second of two articles written by Dick Bourke and Tom Boyer. The first appeared in the January 13, 2003 issue. * Product & Portfolio Management: Part II - Application Software * Part I identified and defined the three levels of Product & Portfolio Management (PPM) : Project, Program, and Portfolio. To overcome the limitations of manually based PPM systems, there is a wealth of Information Technology (IT) application alternatives - NPD process enablers - to consider. Application Software Planning Selecting PPM application software is not just a matter of comparing vendors' software offerings to each other. First, a company should identify its current NPD process strengths, weaknesses and needs with a brief As-Is analysis and a thorough To-Be definition. Only then can a company adequately compare each vendor's features and functions using the details of the company's To-Be vision as criteria for selection. Conference Room Pilots and Proof of Concept demonstrations are two ways to recognize good software fit and possible productivity gains. One approach often suggested is: "Straighten out the paper processes first, then put those processes into a system." While this approach may be an appropriate first step, it may lead to some benefits of an IT automated process being overlooked, as PPM software offers many additional functions that cannot be achieved with manual or semi-manual processes. Importantly, a variety of problems using manually based processes can be overcome with PPM software - assuming effective implementation. Organization-wide use of the features and functions of all three levels of PPM software encourages consistency and clarity in metrics, terminology, reporting methods and analysis, ultimately resulting in more rational decisions. Software Features and Functions Of course, for many companies, evaluating and selecting software to enable improved NPD processes will be a logical strategic action. In addition to general considerations, such as architecture and security, a few of the software features and functionalities pertinent to PPM software to evaluate include:
Prospective buyers are cautioned: wide ranges of PPM functionality exist using different PPM interpretations; some are complete, others not. Some vendors offer comprehensive implementation support. Moreover, claims of "best practices" are subject to scrutiny. Therefore, to create a useful selection short list, prospective buyers need to understand each vendor's products and strategy. In general, there are three categories of sources of PPM software and services, each with advantages and disadvantages. A few selected vendor names in each category are: 1. Product Lifecycle Management - Agile - EDS - IBM - MatrixOne - PTC - Rational 2. Enterprise Resource Planning - Baan - Oracle - PeopleSoft - SAP For the above two categories, a few comments are: Agile is now offering ProductFactory modules in its Program Execution solution; Baan also offers an integrated PLM suite; Oracle is due to announce its PLM suite, including PPM, relying heavily on current Oracle capabilities in project management and financial reporting; PeopleSoft relies on a tight Agile integration to provide ERP/PLM capabilities; and, SAP also offers an integrated PLM suite. 3. Product & Portfolio Management - focused vendors often evolving from project scheduling roots - Aanza - IDe (Integrated Development Enterprise) - Framework Technologies - MS2 - Novare - ProductFactory - Sopheon - Speed to Market The obvious advantage of this third category of vendors is PPM specialization. This group provides valid choices for those companies needing extensive capabilities and fast deployment in a "best of breed" environment. Claims of rapid implementation in terms of days or weeks are usually valid as long as a company accepts that full, mature use may take a while. Hosted solutions, often referred to as an ASP (Application Service Provider), offer low entry prices. Most of these firms, however, are small and relatively new on the scene. As Gartner cautions: "Visionary, but vulnerable." In addition, a factor to consider is the downside of lack of integration to other IT systems. If a company's To-Be PPM vision includes market and customer needs, then additional specialized sources will need to be identified; see QFDI and BetaSphere for examples of two specialized products and services used for requirements analysis. For organizations with limited budgets, a full suite of purchased PPM software may not be feasible. For those companies, a comprehensive understanding and use of manual processes, supported by elements of MS Excel, Outlook, and Project, may have to suffice. An ASP might be an alternative. A Final Thought Certainly, software can be a significant element for successful PPM - one that reaps benefits such as accelerated time-to-market, improved revenue, and reduced product and product development costs. Just using PPM software, however, will not guarantee benefits. Users need to keep software in proper perspective. Therefore, it is crucial first to understand the organization's required NPD processes and then use software to enable the processes. Culture and change management are as important as the software, maybe more so, for gaining the maximum benefits. QFD Proposed ICP-35K Project In a recent issue we mentioned the proposed "Implementing CPD and PLM Technologies for 35,000 European Manufacturing Companies" project for the Sixth Framework Programme of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration. The Expression of Interest for the project is on the European Commission's CORDIS web site at http://eoi.cordis.lu/dsp_details.cfm?ID=34920. The corresponding Call for Proposals has been made: Thematic call in the area of "manufacturing, products and services engineering in 2010". Identifier: [FP6-2002-IST-NMP] Closing Date: 24 April 2003 (first stage) http://fp6.cordis.lu/fp6/call_details.cfm?CALL_ID=10. Here is an updated list, by country, of the Consortium members participating in preparation of the proposal:
A reader contacted us : "I'd like to participate in your project, but I need some help to present it to my boss. You need to know that in our company when you ask a question these days the first answer is 'how much will it save?' followed by 'what is it?' and then 'how?'". Maybe the following will help. How much will it save? The project's targets are:
PLM is the process of managing a product throughout its lifecycle (from requirement or idea to disposal or recycling) PLM is a major business process along with CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and SCM (Supply Chain Management) PLM is a new paradigm. It changes the way people see the world of product development and support. Before PLM, people used to think about separate "bits" - CAD, testing, PDM, New Product Introduction process, Virtual Prototyping, product costing, maintenance, CASE, simulation, Collaborative Development, recycling, mass customization, best practices, visualization, PPM, traceability, CAM, etc. Different people worked in these areas - with different systems, different information, different words, different documents, different standards. Time was wasted, costs were added and quality went down at the interface between each "bit". PLM is holistic. Everything's joined up along the product lifecycle. Processes, information, techniques and systems fit neatly together. Time is saved, costs go down. Why participate in this project? In 2003, PLM is still a vision. No-one knows what it will look like, how it will work, or how we will implement it. Those who get involved now can get the benefits first. Reader question 2 Another reader contacted us : "Why don't you extend the project beyond Europe as it is of world-wide interest? IMS could be a vehicle". According to its web site, IMS is an industry-led, international research and development program established to develop the next generation of manufacturing and processing technologies. Companies and research institutions from Australia, Canada, the European Union and Norway, Japan, Korea, Switzerland, and the United States of America participate in this program. Each IMS project must include elements being performed by project partners in at least three of the regions participating in the IMS Program". We don't know about the level of interest in all these regions. We have only focused on two of them. It would be interesting to know if there is interest elsewhere. We'd like to hear from any companies or research institutions in
