Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis.

* Implementing CPD and PLM Technologies for 35,000 European Manufacturing Companies *
This week we return to our proposed project for the Sixth Framework Programme of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration. We first mentioned this project in the May 20, 2002 issue. At that time we were preparing an Expression of Interest (EoI) with companies and universities from most of the fifteen member states of the European Union (EU). The proposal was submitted in June by a consortium of about 50 organizations including major engineering and manufacturing companies, universities and other research institutes, and system developers and integrators.

The EoI is now on the European Commission's CORDIS web site at http://eoi.cordis.lu/dsp_details.cfm?ID=34920. Its title is Implementing CPD and PLM Technologies for 35,000 European Manufacturing Companies, and its acronym is ICP-35K. The full proposal will be made later this year. If accepted, the project would run from 2003 to 2007.

One of the project's targets is to enable companies to reduce implementation time for CPD (Collaborative Product Development) and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) technologies by 50%. Other targets include enabling companies to cut development effort for new products by 50%, increase the range of products offered by a factor of 100, and reduce sourcing, manufacturing engineering and service costs by 25%.

These are, of course, the types of performance improvement that most companies would like to meet - but have difficulty achieving. For example, most companies don't really want to take several years to implement a PDM system, or to start an implementation knowing there's a 50% failure rate. And they don't want to spend twice the effort needed to develop a new product.

However, the scope of CPD and PLM is so wide that few companies can address effectively all the technologies (processes, systems, techniques, etc.). Most companies are so lean they just don't have the people on the payroll to track and implement all the new technologies. Of course, some 'Global 2000' companies may have such staff, or have the resources to pay for a large number of consultants, experts, programmers and trainers to do the work for them - but Global 2000 companies are a minute percentage of all engineering and manufacturing companies.

We mention the proposed project again as we're looking for additional participants to achieve a balance in terms of size, industry, application and geography.

We're interested in hearing from European engineering and manufacturing companies that may be interested in participating in the project, in particular those that are:
  • SME's
  • and/or in the UK, Sweden, Spain or Austria
  • and/or in the pharmaceutical or food industries
  • and/or in the oil and gas sector
  • and/or in the mobile telephony industry
Industrial organizations get 50% of their costs paid by the European Commission, invaluable PLM and CPD knowledge and experience, a raised profile within Europe, transfer of information with other participants and a fast track to the project's deliverables.

We're also interested in hearing from European universities and other research organizations that could be interested in participating in the proposed project. We're not only looking for those interested in systems such as CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM/PLM, but also for those interested in:
  • processes such as New Product Development and Engineering Change Management
  • financial justification of investment in new technologies
  • human resource issues such as training, team dynamics and multi-cultural working environments
  • knowledge management
  • content management
  • mobile applications
  • training strategies
