- Welcome Page 2 - Update Page 3 - News Page 4 - Brief lines | Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. This week's article, Can Products Talk?, is by regular contributor Roger Tempest. Roger's most recent article, "The Next Big Thing" can be read in the March 11, 2002 issue. * Can Products Talk? * Roger Tempest meets a man who says they can Terry Simpson is on the move. Chief Technology Officer of Entrada Software, he has left his Scottsdale AZ, base for a lightning tour of eight European countries to brief partner organisations on Entrada's evolving Kinnosa product traceability solution. The forerunner of Kinnosa, known as CIMbase, was deployed in 1994 by Motorola on the Iridium satellite project to provide an audit of around 100 space vehicles, each with up to 85,000 parts. It was used to manage, track and audit every critical component in the satellite and coped with a rate of 400 engineering changes per month caused by the concurrent engineering philosophy which overlapped manufacturing with design. Changes that had previously taken 8 to 10 weeks under a manual system were achieved in 20 minutes with the new software. Since then Motorola has bought more Kinnosa, and Entrada has bought eChange Solutions from Motiva. eChange is a Technical Document Management system with connectors to Autodesk, SolidWorks and Helix, and will be updated and expanded to support additional features and platforms. The thing that sets this apart from an everyday software development saga is the concept of talking products, or more precisely, 'narrative goods'. Kinnosa has been conceived to fulfil a vision and concept that are unusual enough to have been trademarked. The vision, paraphrased, is one of products that communicate and interact through a pervasive computing environment to retrieve and convey information about themselves. Physical components and parts are marked to link them to their on-line data so that they can tell other systems about themselves and be told in return. This leads to the concept of a 'product biography' which provides a single point of access to critical product information, and hence a 'product-centric' view of an enterprise. The whole point of a product company is to make and sell products. Customers, employees, suppliers, processes, quality controls, documents and technology all have a relationship only because of the product. Therefore, so the concept holds, a product-centric approach is the only viable basis for integrating enterprises and their value chains into a seamless environment to manage the overall product development process. The impact of this, if taken to its limit, is far reaching. The total product lifecycle embraces a large number of participating companies each generating part of the product data. The product-centric approach demands well-managed and secure paths between all of these companies and their systems (achieved via an API layer, says Terry). Audit and traceability become far easier to achieve but collaboration and ownership become more complex. Stir in an elaborate or compound product configuration, and consider the point of view of a participant in the supply chain working on the products of several different customers, and things get really interesting. As with everything in PLM the main question is "does it work for you?" Is this a bold leap forward towards true PLM or a concept that is more radical than practical? This article is not a product brief but a discussion of an idea. If the idea appeals then contact Terry Simpson or Entrada Software to find out more.
