* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PDM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. Before coming to the main article in this issue, Product Configurator Software: Understanding the Differences by Dick Bourke, here is a short announcement about CPC/PLM Strategies : 2002.

* Product Configurator Software: Understanding the Differences *
Many companies are striving for a robust mass customization strategy - providing customers specifically configured products to meet their unique requirements. Product configurator software is essential to allow customers to accurately select and order from among hundreds of product options. Companies with design and engineering content in configured products, however, require more than simple selection capabilities. Now there are a myriad of software choices spanning the complete range of the To-Order mass customization spectrum.

Assigning end-item part numbers and defining a Bill of Material (BoM) for each product sold, created massive and unwieldy product databases - often riddled with errors - requiring extraordinary maintenance efforts. The burden often fell on engineering personnel, counterproductive to the goals of Product Lifecycle Management, such as reducing product development time and expense.

Effectively using a product configurator gains many benefits, one of which is accurate order entry of a customized product configuration without constant, further validation editing by engineering personnel.

Introducing Product Configurators
Product configurators are software with logic capabilities to create, maintain, and use electronic product models that allow complete definition of all possible product option and variation combinations, with a minimum of data entries and maintenance.

Wayne Collier, a consultant with D. H. Brown, views product configurators as a design and development tool, rather than a redocumentation tool for product configuration in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. This approach to product development for configurable products is called "Generic Product Structures" (GPS). The objective is to completely model the product and option selection rules, including all variety, and validate specific and generic BoMs before release to manufacturing. Therefore, design intelligence is captured from the start of product development.

Within the above definitions, there are distinct differences in configurators. Within the framework of the To-Order spectrum, understanding the differences is vital to ensure success. Case in point: A custom cabinet manufacturer tried to use a simplistic ERP, features and options configurator at the urging of the software vendor. It was impossible to pre-define all of the combinations of dimensions of unique end-items using this method. The implementation failed - a costly error that resulted in customer/vendor litigation; the vendor settled out of court.

The To-Order Spectrum
There are many qualifiers for defining To-Order: Pick, Pack, Assemble, Build, Configure, Design, and Engineer are all common. There is no known industry standard definition. Our frame of reference is: Assemble, Design and Engineer.

On one end of the spectrum, the simplest, Assemble-to-Order (ATO), means product options are pre-designed items and usually stocked. In operation, configuring and ordering a specific configuration is accomplished without any further design activity involving personnel, such as application engineers. Simple visualization and an on-line catalog may be an element of the system. A standard set of features and options is displayed for customer selection.

In contrast, Engineer-to-Order (ETO) mass customization strategies require far more activities and time to complete the order fulfillment cycle, In essence, more integration with the full range of Collaborative Product Development (CPD) methods is necessary. A few of many to consider are: iterative proposal activity, dynamic CAD model generation, visualization, supplier involvement and management, workflow, parameterized documentation, and extensive BOM management.

Design-to-Order (DTO) stands between ETO and ATO with many of the same characteristics of ETO, but to a lesser degree.

Other Evaluation Considerations
Today, configurator technology is available from many sources including Product Data Management (PDM), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and ERP vendors. Most ERP vendors offer configurators that can be used to model the product during the design and development stage, as Collier suggests. In fact, some CRM sales configurators can be used for developing the product model for use in the total product lifecycle.

The logic in some PDM and ERP systems, however, may not be adequate to handle requirements, such as complex pricing schemes. As a result, some of these systems may need to be supplemented with CRM software, or custom programming, for a complete solution.

There are other evaluation aspects to consider, one in particular. How is the product model developed and maintained - rules, constraints, algorithms, etc.? As one telecommunications manufacturer stated: "Our software's methodology can't keep up with a steady stream of product changes. Did we make a mistake in our software selection?" The product modeling techniques may not be suitable, or sufficiently robust, for a specific environment. On the other hand, the various modeling techniques can be sophisticated and may require an extended learning curve before a company can be productive. A Proof of Concept is the answer.

A Frequently Asked Question
Potential buyers sometimes ask: "What is the best configurator software?" There isn't one best. To determine the right answer, compare the software vendor offerings to your company's mass customization strategy.

Future Columns
Within the above frame of references, selected examples of product configurator applications with a focus on DTO/ETO will be described. PTC's recent announcement of DynamicDesignLink, coupled with an alliance with CRM vendor Siebel, brings fresh interest to the DTO/ETO spectrum.
