* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PDM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. The following article, 'The Tony Blair Imperative , is the fourth of a series of articles by Mike Bryan about CAD Data Exchange. The first article, 'A Logical Approach to CAD Data Exchange' appeared in the November 6, 2000 issue. The second, 'Determine Minimum Dataset' appeared in the December 4, 2000 issue, and the third, 'Choose the Exchange Format',in the January 15, 2001 issue.

* The Tony Blair Imperative *
At this point in the data exchange process it is worth recapping and plugging a few holes. Some of you fortunate people out there in cyberspace won't know who Tony Blair is but at the time he became Prime Minister of Great Britain he told the British people he had three priorities. These were education, education and education and then he promptly forgot about it. Now, I have to tell you that in data exchange there are three priorities and these are testing, testing and testing. Reading through my first three articles I see that I only mentioned testing once (in the second article) and I never elaborated on it. This was a grave omission that I will now endeavor to correct.

Testing starts right at the beginning of the design/drafting process. When I was gainfully employed as a CAD Manager, in what now seems like a previous incarnation, I introduced a 'driving license' for CAD users by which they were only approved to use the CAD system after a period of in-house training and the passing of a test. Much management still has the extraordinary idea that a CAD system will turn an incompetent draftsman into a competent one - that the system somehow de-skills the job. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact an incompetent draftsman with the power of a CAD system can create more rubbish with more devastating effect than he/she ever could on a drawing board. Having skilled, properly trained users is a necessary pre-condition to ensure that the source data is accurate and correct. One fairly common problem that occurs from badly prepared CAD data is the receiving system finding only a very bright dot in the center of the screen. This has resulted from spurious entities being present in the data a very long way from the drawing or model proper. So when the receiving system displays all the data it has received by windowing up on it, the real data appears as this very bright dot in the screen center. This will not happen with properly trained users and the systematic checking of CAD data.

This does bring into focus an interesting problem with neutral exchange format processors. Suppose you have a very simple 2D flat pattern that is completely specified in a single view. Some CAD systems automatically generate multiple views which will all be converted by the exchange processor into the exchange file. Depending upon the architecture of the receiving system the received data may be quite messy through the attempted display of the multiple views. It ought to be possible to specify to the exchange processor exactly what parts of the CAD model you wish to process, i.e. which views, which layers, which entity types or even define an enclosing area or volume. In fact what happens is that the processor will convert everything that is present in the CAD model. So, be sure you know what is in the model and be certain there is nothing extraneous or superfluous.

One way of conducting a CAD data exchange test between companies would be to use a typical drawing or model but this is really not thorough or rigorous enough. For 2D work a much better method is to create a special test model that is divided into a number of 2 or 3 inch squares with a sample entity in each square suitably titled. Ensure that every form of every 2D entity supported by the CAD system is catered for. It is then very easy to check what the receiving system has not been able to process. This will identify problem entities but a further test is needed to check accuracy. One that I devised consists of a continuous, complex profile constructed from lines, circular arcs, conics and splines intersected by similar entities. The receiver had to calculate the coordinates of the intersections, the periphery of the profile and the enclosed area.

Exchanging 3D wire-frame data requires a different approach although something similar to the 2D test model exists on the Internet and is known as the CALS Network Test. However, the most suitable method of checking the transfer of surface data involves a more pragmatic approach. Request the receiving company to create tool paths over the surfaces with the number of surface points being generated as a function of the surface complexity. These points can then be passed back in any suitable digital form and then used to calculate their proximity to the original surface. This method and those discussed above give rise to documents that can be stored as quality records for audit purposes.

One last thing. I have recently read an interesting article in the Delcam company newsletter entitled "Solving the billion dollar problem". This concerns the estimated cost of problems with transferring CAD data between systems. The major source of these problems is identified as tolerance, i.e. one system thinks two points are coincident if they fall within .001" while another requires the gap to be less than .0000001". This is worth discussing at greater length at a later date.

Barry Dudley, Product Manager, UGS Europe (dudley@ugsolutions.com) writes:

With respect to your recent article on neutral file exchange formats, I would recommend the addition of the DirectModel '.jt' format. This is the neutral model format from EAI (now UGS) which is open by design for unmatched collaboration and enables unambiguous exchange and sharing of CAD-neutral 3D models. It is adopted by numerous customers and partners, plus most recently by the Covisint Automotive Exchange, which alone plans to support up to around 100,000 users.
