* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PDM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. The following article, 'A Logical Approach to CAD Data Exchange' was written by Mike Bryan.

* A Logical Approach to CAD Data Exchange *
CAD data exchange can be something of a black art with a few well-paid practicing wizards offering hope and salvation. This leaves quite a lot of very depressed suppliers and customers out there in the manufacturing world struggling to exchange data. The uttering of oaths, incantations and prayers might help but a controlled and logical approach to the problem is likely to be more effective and could save a company funding the rich lifestyle of the aforementioned wizards. The steps listed below and their associated paragraphs explain this logical approach.
  • Check CAD source data
  • Determine minimum dataset
  • Choose exchange format
  • Check transfer file
  • Choose exchange medium
* Check CAD Source Data *
There is an old adage that runs through Information technology: Rubbish in Rubbish out. Therefore the first step is to check that the CAD source data is of unquestionable quality. I have to admit that this is not trivial but it is the most important step. The first problem is that we have a long tradition of manually produced engineering drawings and so the first CAD systems simply automated this tradition. The second problem is that many companies have not progressed much beyond that point. By this I don't mean that companies may not be using 3D wire-frame or solids modelers but that checking the data is still most likely achieved through the medium of hard copy plots. That is obviously just not good enough since it is the CAD data that will be used for part manufacture.

How can a CAD model be checked? Well to start with it has to be checked against some form of recommendations or preferably a company standard. Such a standard should specify the usage for layers or levels, allocation of colors, prohibited features, preferred construction methods, etc. The checking could be done manually at a CAD station but that can be inefficient and very tedious. A much better solution is automatic checking through a program that accesses the model through the CAD system's Application Programming Interface (API) and checks its contents and its construction against the company standard.

This is not too difficult to do for 2D drawings, which, let's be honest, still constitute a large percentage of CAD data. Autodesk announced in the Vol.3 No.4 issue of 2PDM that they were now offering 'CAD Standards Extension' for AutoCAD that would enable companies to check their AutoCAD models for compliance against their own drawing standards.

* 3D Models *
It becomes more complicated when we try to address 3D wire-frame and solids models. How should a complex surface be checked? Should a complex surface be checked? Anyone who has attempted to capture a surface with a CAD system from manually lofted lines will know how inaccurate such definitions were. This is not to denigrate Loftsmen who have the rare ability to visualize 3D forms from 2D lines, it is to show that CAD models are at least two orders of magnitude more precise than manually lofted lines. It is necessary to ensure that this precision is not wasted so surface models must be checked. Checks should be instituted to answer the following questions:-
  • Is the surface positionally accurate?
  • Does the surface smoothness conform to the requirement i.e. first order, second order?
  • Are the surface cross-boundary requirements met i.e. zeroth/first/second order?
  • Is the surface everywhere machinable?
There is a VDA recommendation 4955, mirrored by ODETTE ODG11CQ9504 that identifies a series of tests to be performed on 3D wireframe geometry to ascertain and verify its quality.

* Solid Models *
Solids modeling offers some advantages in that assemblies can be created and clash detection tests made. Also, of course, stereolithic models can be made directly from the solids model and used to check the efficacy of the design especially when customer and supplier are working as a team. However, a given solid form may be arrived at in many different ways from a combination of union, intersection, addition and subtraction functions and therefore a standard specifying a preferred constructional methodology is important.

There is a CAD hospital called Badcad.com that offers on-line diagnoses and cures for common ailments in solids models. The 'hospital' estimates that more than 90% of all solids models are faulty in some respect.

So how does all this impact on CAD data exchange? If geometry constructed to form a profile is not continuous then a receiving system may not be able to create a tool path. If a surface is discontinuous then it may be impossible for a receiving system to machine it, especially if 5-axis machining is specified. If a composite surface has inter-surface gaps then analysis software such as Finite Element or Computational Fluid Dynamics may fail. In the case of companies exchanging solids models, a badly constructed model may not be able to be integrated into a composite assembly. And of course, in the end, the customer may not get what he wanted from the supplier because the design intent was not properly specified.

The next step to discuss in a later issue, Editor permitting, is how to determine the minimum dataset that needs to be transferred.
