- Welcome Page 2 - Update Page 3 - News Page 4 - Brief lines | Welcome to this issue of 2PDM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. This week's article, The Next Big Thing, is from Roger Tempest. * The Next Big Thing * If your mother was watching you run your CPC/PLM program she might well insist that you eat your greens before getting any pudding. If she were as technically aware as you are perhaps she would upgrade this advice to "finish your PDM before getting any CPC/PLM". In your defence, you could point out that CPC and PLM are more than mere extensions of PDM and that even rudimentary progress with CPC/PLM will yield benefits that PDM alone cannot provide. You could add that if you waited until PDM was set up perfectly you would wait forever, at which, chastened, she might turn her attention to whether you had cleaned your shoes today. CPC/PLM is the next big thing for engineering and manufacturing companies and takes its place alongside ERP, CRM and B2B in the efforts of technical directors and IT departments. Manufacturing is becoming ever more complex. Companies need more and more software packages to manage and run their business applications and ever more powerful hardware to run them on. If you take a step backwards you can see this phenomenon happening right across the IT spectrum. A study of the market for IT contract staff in the UK and Europe (always an indicator of the skills and software that are most in demand) shows how complex things have become. Once there were operating systems and applications - now there is middleware to sit between them. To analyse your business you now need Rational Rose or Summit or SSADM; to configure your products you need ClearCase or Continuus; to run your projects you need Tracker or Remedy. The hardware is growing to match. Once there were disks and RAID arrays - now there are Storage Area Networks. Distributed computing systems are being centralised onto Superdomes, E10000s or Regattas which require a week's formal training before you can even switch them on. Whatever area of business you care to name there are software packages that will help to run it. What's more, companies are buying them, looking for that competitive edge or a new way to make their staff more effective. After a while users cannot work unless their application is running correctly and cannot improve unless the application is developed further. Computer support becomes critical to the business, and IT salaries and skill requirements balloon to match. Who are more important to your company - people with core business competencies and skills or IT staff who keep the computers running? Chances are, you'll find it easier to recruit replacements for the former. This cannot last, and that is why we are heading for a technology implosion. First, there was a dot com boom in which money was piled into fledgling companies in defiance of common sense and the basic rules of how businesses work. Now there is a telecomms downturn because vendors disregarded the evidence to be seen in every high street - that everyone has a mobile phone and we only need one each. The third bubble to burst will be the dream of the all-embracing computer system, where every task has its computer package and all the packages link together in a manageable whole, to which the CPC/PLM ideals subscribe. The dream will fail not because it cannot be achieved but because it is too expensive, too unwieldy, and ignores the maxim: "the greatest asset of a business is its people". The drive towards CRM, for example, is already faltering as sales directors realise that many of the professed benefits can be achieved simply by having good people working closely together. This trend will spread as IT budgets hit the ceiling (even IT budgets do have a limit) and alternative ways of working have to be found. Companies can gain an edge from getting the same benefits while using simpler IT than their competitors, starting a virtuous cycle of lower costs and greater simplicity. This will not spell the end of CPC/PLM but will entail more pragmatic and sensible implementations which make better use of people and processes and which are more in tune with the running of the underlying business.
