* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis.

Readers may remember that the January 3, 2005 issue of 2PLM started like this :

* 2005 - a great year for Product Lifecycle Management *
Going into 2005, it's good to see that PLM is gaining acceptance with users and solution vendors. There's still a long way to go, but the concept of managing products across their lifecycles is increasingly accepted. This will make it easier for companies to develop the business case for PLM, make plans and implement PLM.

Our feel for the PLM market at the end of 2004 resulted from contacts with people in hundreds of companies using PLM and hundreds of companies providing PLM services and products. As shown in the News Section below, the recently released Q1 2005 quarterly results of PLM vendors confirm that feeling. The PLM market has grown in the first quarter, and we now estimate that growth in calendar year 2005 will be in the range of 5% to 10%.

However, over the last few months we've seen companies putting back decision dates for taking major investment decisions in the area of PLM. The cause often seems to be a lack of PLM Strategy. We've addressed this subject in recent issues of 2PLM and, from the feedback to those articles, can see that many companies are very aware of the need to make progress with PLM, but are finding it difficult to initiate the corresponding action.

Often the difficulty is not that they don't want PLM, or a project to develop a PLM Strategy, but that they can't get such an activity started. Usually the reason is a lack of resources ("everyone is busy with the ERP project" ; "my manager doesn't understand PLM" ; "we've spent our budget" ; "management blocks all requests for training, travel and consultants" ; "we can't look at PLM until we've finished PDM").

Many PLM vendors are aware of this difficulty and, to help overcome it, are increasing their Marketing activities. More PLM events are being held, and vendors are supporting them better than before. More White Papers, position papers and Press Releases are appearing.

We are contributing in 2 ways to helping companies make progress with their PLM Strategy. First, we're proposing a 2- or 3-day on-site PLM Breakthrough Workshop aimed specifically at achieving management buy-in for PLM action. The Workshop is for companies that have a good feeling for where they want to go in PLM and, with a few days of concentrated, focused work, can build a presentation that will convince management of the need to launch a PLM activity.

Secondly, following on from the publication in 2004 of Product Lifecycle Management : Paradigm for 21st century Product Realisation, the foundation book for the "new" PLM, we've now developed a Manual, "Overcoming the PDM Manager's Dilemma : Moving to PLM". This is an action-oriented workbook for PDM Managers and CAD Managers currently faced with the many questions, problems, challenges and opportunities of PLM. Often such people are in the situation of needing to bring together, understand, structure and prioritize a lot of information which they then need to put in a business-oriented form that can be presented to top management.

The Manual starts with a brief introduction to PLM. This is followed by sections describing the concept of PLM and the typical PLM project that enables this concept to become reality. The following chapters describe how people and companies with different objectives can build their own Action Plans and PLM Projects. The Appendix provides support information of various types.

We'll give more details about the Manual in the next issue of 2PLM.
