* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. This week we start by looking at some events proposed by the PLM Interest Group (PLMIG) in April 2005:
  • April 20. PLM Best Practice Forum
  • April 27. PLM Research SIG Meeting
  • April 28-29. PLMIG's PLM/SCM Workshop
* The PLM and Software Configuration Management Workshop *
We addressed the integration of Software Configuration Management (SCM) and Product Data Management (PDM) in the January 5, 2004 issue of 2PLM, including the following quotations:
  • "It is a challenge to manage documentation of systems consisting of both software and hardware. The software developers prefer to keep the software-related documentation in the SCM system, while at the same time there is a need to manage this documentation together with the overall product documentation" - ABB, Sweden
  • "We meet new challenges in the management of software components consisting of internally developed units, Open Source Code, and Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS), complying with different import/export rules and restrictions, and use them as embedded software in different versions and variants of devices, products and systems". - Annita Persson Dahlqvist, Ericsson AB, Sweden.
Many 21st Century products, such as cars, telecomms equipment and medical equipment are built with tightly integrated hardware and software components. Yet:
  • Product Data Management systems are used to manage the data defining the hardware components
  • Software Configuration Management is used to manage the evolution of the software components
  • PDM and SCM have evolved in parallel, and almost independently, in their respective domains, solving domain-specific demands and using different technologies.
The result is a complex situation in which different, sometimes conflicting, approaches are taken to managing the data and processes linked to different parts of the same product. However, it is the same product, and PDM and SCM must be combined to ensure effective and efficient product and system development, production and maintenance.

It is expected that, in future years, more and more products will contain both hardware and software components. It is also expected that as Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) becomes more widespread, the demand on integration between PDM and SCM processes and data will increase.

The challenges for those responsible for managing the lifecycles of products with tightly integrated hardware and software components are already significant, and are expected by many to grow in coming years.

The PLM and SCM Workshop to be held in Gothenburg, Sweden on April 28-29, 2005 will identify:
  • current experience with SCM/PDM
  • the major issues associated with PLM/PDM/SCM
  • currently available implementation approaches
  • ideas for future solutions
The Workshop will be hosted by Annita Persson Dahlqvist, a senior specialist in CM, SCM and PDM at Ericsson AB, and co-author of the best-selling PDM/SCM book, "Implementing and Integrating Product Data Management and Software Configuration Management". This book provides an excellent introduction to the subject, showing the similarities and differences of SCM and PDM, and ways to combine them. It also provides coverage of the wide range of PDM/SCM tools available in the marketplace.

The book was published in July 2003, and the Workshop will provide an opportunity to take account of progress since then.

The Workshop is open to both PLMIG members and PLMIG non-members.

For more information, contact Roger Tempest.

* PLM Best Practice Forum, Paris *
This is one of a series of meetings in which the PLMIG is collaboratively defining PLM Best Practice. This meeting will:
  • build on the findings of the PLMIG PLM Best Practice meeting held in Oxford, England in February 2005
  • identify and describe additional Best Practices, and their implementation details
  • discuss the additional steps needed to achieve a complete definition of Best Practice
This meeting, held at PSA Velizy B, is open to both PLMIG members and PLMIG non-members.

For more information, visit the FPDMUG or contact Roger Tempest.

* PLM Research Meeting, Gothenburg *
This is a meeting of the PLMIG's Research SIG (RSIG). The RSIG is aiming to become the global leader in PLM research. This will not be easy to achieve, and will certainly require a lot of effort. However it seems that such an approach is necessary if PLM research is to make a meaningful impact.

Achievement of significant PLM research results will require a co-ordinated program of research carried out by a critical mass of researchers from many organizations. To achieve funding for such a research program will require high visibility in industry, academia and research funding bodies. Membership of the RSIG is open to all organizations wanting to participate in achieving successful PLM research.

During its meeting in Gothenburg, the RSIG will:
  • prepare proposals for EC FP6 Calls with closing dates in September 2005
  • continue to work on the development of 2 PLM Research White Papers
  • define the next activities leading to the creation of a joint academia/industry PLM Research Forum. One of the objectives of this Forum will be to initiate and strengthen long-term PLM-oriented relationships between industry and academia.
Researchers in both industrial and academic organizations may join the RSIG, and participate in this meeting which is being held at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.
