* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis.

* PLM Benchmarking Workshop *
The October 11 issue of 2PLM mentioned briefly the announcement by the PLM Interest Group of a November 17-19 PLM Benchmarking Workshop. This is a useful initiative that is worth looking at in more detail. It's the first collaborative attempt by companies :
  • to define a common approach for the benchmarking of their use of PLM
  • to create a PLM Benchmarking Handbook
The objective is that the Handbook will be usable by a range of companies, whatever their size, the PLM systems they are using, their industry or their definition of PLM.

Benchmarking is acknowledged as one of the standard tools of company management. It's a widely-used and accepted means of positioning a company's performance in a particular area, understanding strengths and weaknesses, and providing a base for planning and future activities.

With PLM becoming an increasingly strategic activity, many managers are now looking for an independent appraisal of their PLM position, performance and progress. They need a firm basis on which to build their plans and to justify the corresponding investments. Benchmarking offers them the chance to position their PLM activities against those of other companies in a neutral, collaborative environment.

However it is not easy to benchmark PLM use. The wide range of views of the scope of PLM can cause a problem. So can the involvement of numerous organizations throughout the product life cycle, for example during product development. Intellectual property, legal and confidentiality issues can arise. Cross-industry differences and system specifics can be a hindrance. Just setting the scene for the benchmark may seem too time-consuming.

What is needed is for some trailblazers to lead the way. Afterwards it will be easier for others to follow.

The PLM Benchmarking Workshop will bring together PLM practitioners from different industries and countries with a common interest in developing a generic PLM benchmarking approach and PLM Benchmarking Handbook. PLM user companies will participate to build the basis for their benchmarks. PLM system vendors and consultants will participate to be involved in developing a de facto standard methodology that they can incorporate into their products and services.

 PLMIG : PLM Benchmarking Workshop

You should attend this Workshop:
  • if your company is involved in a PLM benchmark now
  • if you want an independent measure of PLM performance to apply in your own organization this year
  • if you know you'll be involved in PLM benchmarking in the future
  • if you want to ensure the benchmark includes specific points of particular importance to you
  • if you want to bring your skills and experience to a cross-industry initiative that will benefit the PLM community
  • if your company is looking for ways to get ahead of competitors
By attending the Workshop, not only will you get the headline deliverables, but you will also benefit from working together with PLM practitioners with years of experience of the issues of PLM. The Workshop format has been designed to allow everyone to be involved and to contribute in the most constructive way. After three days you will leave the Workshop with new insights and improvement ideas.

If the location or date is not convenient for you, why not ask a colleague to attend? Details are available as follows:

* Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation *
PLM is a new paradigm, a 'joined-up' paradigm. It joins up many previously separate and independent processes, disciplines, functions and applications - each of which, though addressing the same product, had its own vocabulary, rules, culture and language. PLM extends and brings together previously separate technologies such as CAD, PDM, Configuration Management, RFID, Group Technology, Product Portfolio Management and Life Cycle Analysis. These technologies developed independently, but they all address the same thing - the product.

Rather than focusing on a particular technology, PLM focuses on the product. PLM manages each individual product across its lifecycle - from 'cradle to grave'; from the very first idea for the product all the way through until it is retired and disposed of. Managing a product across its lifecycle allows a company to take control of what happens to it. But PLM doesn't just manage one of a company's products, it enables the company's complete portfolio of products to be managed in an integrated way.

The recently published book, "Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation" explains:
  • the implications and importance of PLM
  • how to take full advantage of PLM
  • how to choose the best solution for a company's specific situation
  • how to implement PLM
Note:
Due to high world-wide demand for the book, several booksellers and on-line stores have sold out, with the result that, in some areas, delivery times are 2 to 3 weeks. Review current availability in 6 countries here.
