* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis.

* PLM - Keeping it short *
Usually, after each issue of 2PLM we receive some feedback from readers about the content.

Unusually, after the September 27 issue, there was diametrically opposing feedback.

One reader wrote that the text about PLM was "excellent in its simplicity", whereas another wrote that it was "simplistic", and went on to detail many things that the text could have included (starting with versions, releases, variants, options, models, revisions, prototypes, pilots, parts, etc.)

However, 2PLM aims to be as concise as possible. People expect to read it in a minute or two. Simplicity has its place.

Victory in the 1992 US presidential election is sometimes said to be due to the 4-word phrase "It's the economy, stupid", one of James Carville's simple, but effective messages.

An equivalent may be, "PLM? It's the product, stupid."

However, that's a message to be used with care when presenting to the CEO or CFO.

So, present it on a PPT slide, and mention the source "Chapter 2, Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation".

"Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation" contains about 40 pages of PPT presentation material from which to develop your own CXO presentation.

The book is more than 400 pages long, and full of useful material about PLM. It describes PLM and PLM projects in the 21st Century. Read it and find out if your company's project fits today's world - or is a leftover from the last century. It is available here.

The Product Lifecycle Management Interest Group (PLMIG) announced a busy program for the next few months.

The PLMIG's 3-day PLM Benchmarking Workshop will be held at Siemens, Munich on 17-19 November 2004. (Note that the subject of this first-of-its-kind Workshop is not the benchmarking of PLM systems, but the benchmarking of a company's use and support of PLM.) Reserve those days, and find out how you can benchmark your PLM performance against that of other companies. Find out your current situation, identify areas of improvement. Benchmarking results will help set targets and prepare plans for next year.

The PLMIG's annual Corporate Member's Meeting is being scheduled for December. This is the meeting that will set the path for the PLMIG's activities in 2005.

Plans are being made to hold the Kick-Off Meeting for the PLMIG's definition of a PLM Capability and Maturity Model in January 2005.

And two more PLM Top Ten Meetings will be scheduled before the end of January 2005.

For more details of these events, please contact Roger Tempest.
