* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. In this issue we start by looking at some of the PLM events scheduled for the next few weeks.

* PLMIG meeting in Sweden *
The PLM Interest Group's next 'PLM Top Ten' meeting will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden on Tuesday October 12. Details.

This will be of particular interest to PLM professionals in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. PLMIG meetings are held at member sites, and the next few meetings after this one are expected to be held well to the south of Gothenburg.

PLM Top Ten meetings are designed to allow in-depth discussion and analysis of PLM issues by a small group of PLM professionals working together. Because it is intended that the meetings should address the specific issues raised by the participants at the meeting, their size is limited. In the morning, all participants can make informal presentations about their PLM implementation and issues. The maximum number of presentations that will fit comfortably into a morning session is about 10, which limits the number of participants. In the afternoon, the group reviews the main issues that have emerged in the morning, and ranks them in order of importance - for the participants in that particular meeting. Then the group addresses the issues in order of ranked importance.

As each meeting is small, several of them are being held. The Gothenburg meeting is the second in the series. It is open to PLM professionals from all countries, and provides those from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden with an opportunity to attend a PLMIG meeting close to home. The first meeting, in Zurich, Switzerland was fully-subscribed and identified 25 issues.

The participation fee is 595 Euros (769.20 USD) for non-members of the PLMIG, 245 Euros (475.20 USD) for members. The non-member rate includes individual membership of the PLMIG as part of the fee.

If you would like to participate in the Gothenburg PLM Top Ten Meeting, please contact Roger Tempest.

Other events taking place in the next few weeks include : * Product Lifecycle Management - a strategic 21st century business approach *
Several readers pointed out that "Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation", the book mentioned in the previous issue of 2PLM, was not available at the Web addresses provided. To be precise, some Web pages showed the book available since July, some since August, some in September, and some showed it not yet available.

This is a good example of the need for PLM. If this is what happens in the lifecycle of such a simple product as a book, imagine what happens for a family of complex products (and their accompanying User Manuals) for which:
  • customers can select options over the Web
  • components are changed whenever engineering changes come through
  • upgrades appear every few months
  • suppliers are changed frequently to benefit from lowest costs
  • styling changes with the seasons to keep up with market trends
Without a PLM approach, the result will be chaos, and
  • customers will be frustrated
  • managers will be fired
  • customers will be lost
  • stockholders will complain
  • VPs will be fired
and eventually a PLM approach will be taken.

* SCM and CRM caught between a Rock and a Hard Place *
PLM is the strategic business approach corresponding to the requirements and available technologies of the early 21st century. It focuses on the product, and is complementary to ERP (which focuses on the enterprise).

ERP has been important for a long time. It will continue to be important. PLM has emerged in the early years of the 21st century. As PLM grows in importance, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) will be squeezed between ERP and PLM.

Coming years will see many new and upgraded products brought to market in quick succession under PLM control. SCM will need to respond so quickly and closely that it will have to be incorporated into PLM.

PLM focuses on products - which are used by customers. The 'technical' knowledge about customer needs and use of products will be managed in PLM, the 'administrative' knowledge about customers (for example, their addresses) in ERP.

As PLM moves forward (analysts are forecasting a PLM application system market size of about $20 billion), business processes, structures and systems will change. To understand why these changes are happening and how to respond, read "Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation". Available here.
