* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis.

* PLM - a 21st century paradigm *
Many commentators and analysts are now forecasting that Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) will have a huge impact on industry and society.

Sometimes they compare its likely impact to that of mass production. Sometimes they talk of its effects on business organizations, society, on sustainable development, or on the environment. Sometimes they address the new billion-dollar markets it will lead to. Some commentators expect that PLM will have major legal and political repercussions. Others claim it will lead to major changes in the way that engineers are educated.

Obviously, organizations that will be affected by PLM need to get a deep understanding of it as soon as possible.

And there's no better way to learn about PLM than by reading "Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation". Details

Published last week, this is essential reading for :
  • anyone involved with the management of products and their related services
  • everyone in the PLM industry

* NASA highlights the need for PLM *
There are five phases in a product's lifecycle :
  • Imagine
  • Define
  • Realise
  • Use (operate) / Support (service, maintain)
  • Dispose (recycle) / Retire
Last week, NASA's Genesis capsule crashed in a Utah desert in its operational phase - but the causes of failure lie in an earlier phase.

* The plan *
Nearly 19 miles above the ground over UTTR, the capsule begins to decelerate by releasing a small "drogue" parachute, which helps to slow down and stabilize the 500-pound capsule. Moments later, when the capsule is about 20,000 feet above ground, a larger rectangular-shaped parafoil like a skydiver's chute allows the capsule to gently spiral downward at just 10 miles per hour. Details

* The reality *
The Genesis sample return capsule entered Earth's atmosphere at 9:52:47 a.m. MDT and entered the preplanned entry ellipse in the Utah Test and Training Range as predicted. However, the Genesis capsule, as a result of its parachute not deploying, impacted the ground at a speed of 311 kilometers per hour (193 mph). Details

* Next step *
The $264m Genesis mission spent more than two years gathering the solar material to help scientists understand the origin of the Sun and the planets.

The US space agency is now setting up a review board to study what went wrong. Details

Without going anywhere near NASA or the Genesis capsule, it can be expected that the conclusions of the review board will include:
  • technical problems (a component failed due to the extreme operating conditions)
  • organizational problems (communication failures between managers, engineers and contractors; a culture of risk-taking ; insufficient testing; insufficient training)
PLM is a new paradigm, but it is built on past experience as well as new realities. Among the examples of problem products mentioned in "Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation" are NASA's Challenger and Columbia Space Shuttles. Review boards were also set up to study what went wrong with them.

Further to the NIST report that Kjell Bengtsson of EPM Technology informed us of in August, he has now told us of a similar report "Planning Report 04-2 Economic Impact of Inadequate Infrastructure for Supply Chain Integration". This 190 page PDF report comes in at 848 kB. In this study, the authors examine the current state of supply chain integration (SCI), estimate the economic impact of inadequate integration, and identify opportunities for governmental organizations to provide critical standards infrastructures that will improve the efficiency of supply chain communications. They estimate the total annual costs of inadequacies in supply chain infrastructures to be in excess of $5 billion for the automotive industry, and almost $3.9 billion for the electronics industry.
