Details The concept of this meeting is based on that of the Oxford and Frankfurt meetings held in 2003 to set up the PLMIG. Those meetings were much appreciated by participants, particularly due to the deep involvement they enabled, and because of the intense group discussions that were generated as topics caught the imagination. It is rare that PLM professionals can meet under such circumstances, and one of the main benefits of the PLMIG in the short term seems to lie in the possibilities it offers for discussion, development and sharing of PLM ideas and contacts with other members. Because it is intended that everyone will have the opportunity to speak about their PLM issues, the size of the meeting is limited. The maximum number of presentations that will fit comfortably into a morning session is about 10, which limits the number of participants. In the afternoon the group will address together the main issues that have emerged in the morning as most important for the participants in that particular meeting. As each meeting will be small, several of them will be held. Over time, this will generate an overall "hit parade" of the PLM Top Ten issues. If you would like to participate in a PLM Top Ten Meeting, please contact Roger Tempest. PLM Open Days The PLMIG has partnered with Knowledge Futures to run four "PLM Open Days". The first two of these will be held in Benelux and Germany in June. Knowledge Futures is a European Institute for knowledge and services which enables organizations to collaborate effectively on product innovation. Supported by the European Commission and the UK government, it is a key promoter of Collaborative Product Development. The Open Days will be held as a roadshow, with 3 days at each location. The PLMIG presenters will be at the event location on the day before each Open Day to run an informal surgery. The Open Day will provide attendees with a clear and logical view of PLM that is easy for them to assimilate. It will also, via the Knowledge Futures involvement, take them through the issues and opportunities of Collaboration in Product Innovation. The morning session of each Open Day will be formal, with presentations covering the most important issues of PLM and product development, issues that organizations in all industries need to address. The afternoon session will be run for the benefit of the participants on the day, leading up to an open discussion on the issues that are of most interest to them. If you would like to participate in a PLM Open Day, please contact Roger Tempest. * To-PLM Map * We mentioned the "To-PLM Map" in the April 26, 2004 issue of 2PLM. Readers asked several questions about it. Here are some answers. Question : What does this map show? Answer : It positions PLM and other product-related activities / initiatives / acronyms (e.g., CAD, CPD, LCA) that may be of importance to a business. The positioning is based on span across functions (horizontal axis) and number of business components (e.g., processes, applications, standards, techniques) addressed (vertical axis). Product Lifecycle Management is in the top right cell as it addresses all product-related components across the entire lifecycle. Question : Which TLAs are most important? Answer : The map is not intended to show, or imply in any way, that one initiative / acronym is more important than another. More likely it's showing the complexity of an initiative. The complexity (and the likely difficulty of implementation) of an initiative increases going up the map, and moving from left to right across the map. For example, it will be more difficult to implement Product Data Management than to implement CAD because many more departments, organizations and people will be involved. It will be more difficult to implement PLM than Product Data Management because PLM doesn't just address product data, but also addresses processes (such as product development and modification processes), techniques such as TRIZ, organizational structures, and human resource issues. Question : Is PLM a process? Answer : No, it's the business activity of managing an organization's products all the way across their lifecycles in the most effective way. Question : Where is MPM? (similar question : Where is QFD?) Answer : MPM and QFD are included in the updated map below. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) involves several organizational entities, and addresses one component. Manufacturing Process Management (MPM) involves several organization entities and addresses several components. Question : Where is document management? Answer : "Document management (DM)" is vague. Probably it's running across several organizational entities. Enterprise Content Management (ECoM) would be more likely to address the entire product lifecycle. Engineering Change Management (EChM) also addresses the entire product lifecycle, but addresses more than one component.
To reduce confusion, Product Data Management is shown as PDaM and Product Development Management as PDeM. Product Data Management runs across the product lifecycle, and focuses on one component - data. Product Development Management addresses all components, and runs across several functions - but not the whole lifecycle. PLM articles We're always pleased to hear of articles about PLM that appear in other publications - and to inform readers about them. Thanks this week to Chris Horrocks, President, Strategic Advanced Management Systems, Inc. and Dennis Strader of Delphi Corp. for pointing out such articles. Chris Horrocks informed us of a 2-page article in the Financial Times of April 28. The headline was "Special Report : including a focus on PLM, the glue for design and development". Details Dennis Strader informed us of an article called "Just Another Acronym". Details These articles offer different views of PLM to those expressed in 2PLM. |
