- Welcome Page 2 - Update Page 3 - News Page 4 - Brief lines | Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. * Scope, Provenance and Future of PLM * Recent issues of 2PLM have led to feedback from several readers. Chris Hawver, of Sopheon wrote "May I suggest that the concept and father of PLM is Dr. Philip Kotler. The concept of PLM is founded in basic Marketing 101 text books authored by the same. The shame is marketing professionals have not led the charge of the PLM concept, and implemented this concept in an automated fashion through-out their respective companies... beyond a CRM application". That's an interesting suggestion - certainly different from the usual suggested sources for PLM of PDM and ERP. (By the way, Philip Kotler is Professor of International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. Professor Kotler is the author of "Marketing Management: Analysis, Planning, Implementation and Control", a marketing book used widely in graduate business schools.) Dick Bourke informed us of a recent report, "The Adaptive Supply Chain: Postponement for Profitability", from the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS). The report recognizes "Product Design Standardization" as the highest critical success factor for postponement, which is a supply chain strategy that delays product differentiation to a point closer to the customer. This strategy requires the design and development of products that can be customized quickly and inexpensively once actual customer demand is known. PLM can support such a strategy. (By the way, information about past articles on postponement can be obtained from Bob Stahl. Information about APICS can be found here.) Another reader asked us if PLM is the activity of managing product data across the lifecycle. We informed them that it isn't. PLM is the activity of managing products across their lifecycle (from cradle to grave). Product data has been managed across the lifecycle for the last ten to fifteen years by Product Data Management (PDM) systems. At various times PDM systems were also known as Engineering Data Management (EDM) systems, PIM (Product Information Management) systems and PKM (Product Knowledge Management) systems. Typically they have functionality for Product Data Vault Management, Product Configuration Management and Engineering Change Management. PDM systems are just one component of a PLM solution. The roots of PLM are just as much in Product Marketing, ERP and Supply Chain Management as in PDM. The Market News page of the December 1993 issue of the Engineering Data Management Newsletter mentions companies such as Formtek, Metaphase Technology and Sherpa Corporation which were among the first companies set up specifically to manage product data. A Product Brief in the November 1991 issue of the Engineering Data Management Newsletter provides more detail about Sherpa - which was founded in 1985 (nearly twenty years ago). By the way, the Engineering Data Management Newsletter ceased publication in December 2003. Since January 2004 it is part of the Product Lifecycle Management Journal. Dennis Strader of Delphi Corp. sent us a link to a very interesting article about PLM. With headings like "PLM - a Strategy, Not an App", and text like "The key to realizing full PLM potential, however, is recognizing that PLM is a business initiative, rather than an application or even a set of applications", readers might think it comes from 2PLM. The article shows how PLM has evolved since "There's a New App in Town : Product Lifecycle Management" appeared last year. Eirik Isene of Isene PDM Projections wrote, "There are two confusing concepts I would like you to set straight in your e-zine. The first is Life Cycle Management - Life Cycle of what?
Eirik sent a PowerPoint slide (380 kB) to illustrate his questions. One of the objectives of the Product Lifecycle Management Interest Group (PLMIG), which was set up earlier this year, is to work towards common definitions. However, this is not expected to be easy. PLM is holistic. It brings together many previously separate and independent processes, disciplines, functions and systems - each of which had its own vocabulary, rules, culture and language. The term Life Cycle Management usually appears in the specific contexts of "Software Life Cycle Management" and "Environmental Life Cycle Management". These are both part of the wider term Product Lifecycle Management. "Life Cycle Management" on its own is unclear. Rephrasing the above question as "The first is Product Lifecycle Management - Life Cycle of what?", the answer is - the product. Which leads to the following answers :
Some people use Configuration in the sense of "the ability to manage Engineering Changes to a Product". Others talk about "the ability to configure a Product Instance based on configuration rules related to the Nominal Product". (By "Nominal Product", I mean the Product Documentation of a Product (perhaps a "model") with all its Options. I use Nominal Product to distinguish this from a Product Instance. I assume that Product Engineering is responsible for documenting the "Configuration Rules" that show:
This Configurator is not necessarily a part of PDM but perhaps a part of the PLM processes. I would like to see that the first definition is discarded as "configuration" and is adopted as part of PLM (where it belongs). The confusion is great. I have to explain this again and again at workshops and meetings. PLM brings together many previously separate and independent processes, disciplines, functions, departments (e.g. Marketing, Engineering, Manufacturing) and systems - each of which had its own vocabulary, rules, culture and language. The result is often confusion, and a lot of time is wasted clarifying such terms. According to The Institute of Configuration Management, CM is the process of managing products, facilities and processes by managing the information about them, including changes, and ensuring they are what they are supposed to be in every case. The first meaning given by Eirik looks like "Configuration" as used within the discipline of Configuration Management. The second meaning looks like "Configuration" as used in relation to Product Configurators and Sales Configurators. In reality the two activities are not completely separate. There's overlap between them. They could both use the same product data. It's confusing to have two activities that overlap - but it reflects the way that, in the past, companies were structured. Separate groups of specialists were set up to carry out what appeared to be different tasks. In reality, they are not completely different tasks. With a PLM approach, supported by today's computer and communications technology, such activities can be brought together. With PLM, company structures and processes will change to remove the duplication of work that is at the root of the confusion. But it will be many years before there is a consensus on new terminology. So Eirik, you'll have to explain it a few more times. |
![]() * PLMIG News : The PLM Top Ten * The PLM Interest Group (PLMIG) will run a one-day event, "PLM Top Ten", in different locations in the coming months. The first meetings are likely to be held in the two weeks after Easter. Details. If you are interested in participating in one of these events, please contact Roger Tempest. * PLMIG News : The PLM Journal * The PLM Journal is circulated to subscribers and PLMIG members at the end of each calendar month. As well as carrying news of Group discussions and events, it contains detailed interviews with PLMIG members dealing with a wide range of PLM issues and experiences. The January 2004 issue included 'Defining PLM', and a member report from a Tier One automotive supplier. The February issue featured 'PLM at C- Level', a member report from an organization faced with 100 million parts to manage, and views on PLM in the Electronics Industry. It is a policy of the PLMIG that its detailed proceedings and published material remain confidential to members. An extract of the January issue of the PLM Journal which meets these guidelines can be downloaded from this link. * PLMIG News : Membership * Should you join the Product Lifecycle Management Industry Group? With members in North America, Asia and Europe, the PLMIG is the only independent global body addressing the future of Product Lifecycle Management. A few questions:
