Steve Shoaf of IBM informed us that "IBM, in conjunction with Dave Burdick (originally with Gartner Group, and now with Collaborative Visions), coined the term PDM II in 1998. PDM II meant Product Development Management and included Virtual Product Development Management (VPDM) along with traditional PDM. VPDM addressed capture and management of critical design information early in the design cycle (before release) that could impact manufacturing as well as service and support. PDM referred to the traditional PDM activity of managing released design data. IBM marketed PDM II until 2000 when it was first to begin using the term PLM to describe the combination of CAD, PDM, middleware, hardware and integration to other enterprise systems as a business solution." By the way, all previous issues of 2PLM and its predecessor are available from this page. The events that Steve refers to are mentioned in the September 28, 1998 and July 3, 2000 issues. Don Frank, President of D. N. Frank Associates, wrote that "My perception of PLM is: managing the configuration of products from the first weenie of a RFQ or RFI until all field support activities are no longer needed; and capturing all the activities and data that support that lifecycle. Unfortunately, it seems that both IT and the engineering community seem to demand ownership of these tools, rather than participating in an enterprise-wide application of these tools and then extending them, wherever practicable, into the supply chain. By the way, ERP is a horrible misnomer foisted on us by analysts and abetted by software houses who needed something to sell beyond MRPII. APICS, in the 10th edition of its Dictionary also has an entry ERM, Enterprise Resources Management, which is more on target." That seems reasonable. Don didn't seem to like the following pair of sentences in the article in the February 16, 2004 issue - "Product Lifecycle Management is a business activity. PDM is an IS application." He wrote "PDM is the process by which data is managed. IT may provide the tools, but it is the business folk who are doing the work of entering, routing, retrieving and archiving the data. This is kinda like saying that ERP is an IT function." So, perhaps we should expand the text to make it clearer, first for PLM:
