* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis.

* PDM, PDM MK II and PLM *
In the previous issue of 2PLM, Menno Huijben wrote, on the subject of PDM MKII,

Perhaps we jumped too soon at PLM and what we should have done was to do what we did with MRP: go, via MRP II, to ERP.

So, should we forget about PLM for a while and go for PDM MKII?

* Two worlds *
This is an interesting thought. On one side there is:
  • MRP (Material Requirements Planning) addressing a small part of a departmental/functional activity at the workgroup level
  • MRP II (Manufacturing Resource Planning) addressing a major activity at the departmental/functional level
  • ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) addressing an enterprise-wide activity at the enterprise level
On the other side there could be:
  • PDM (Product Data Management) addressing a small part of a departmental/functional activity
  • PDM MK II addressing a major activity at the departmental/functional level
  • PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) addressing an enterprise-wide activity at the enterprise level
PLM is not PDM
As Menno pointed out, PLM is not PDM:
  • Product Lifecycle Management is a business activity. PDM is an IS application.
  • Product Lifecycle Management is the management of a product across its lifecycle. PDM is the management of product data. There is a huge difference between managing a product and just managing data.
  • PDM has been with us since the 1980s, PLM only in the last few years.
  • PDM is primarily (let's say 90%) about managing data, just a little about managing workflow. PLM is maybe 30% about managing data. It also addresses processes (e.g. new product development, engineering change), methodologies (e.g. phase/gate) and applications (e.g. CAD, portfolio management).
  • PDM is usually of great interest to an Engineering Systems Manager, little interest to an Engineering VP, and very little interest to the CEO and the CFO. PLM is of great interest to the CEO and the CFO.
There's a huge gap between PDM and PLM.

* PDM MKII *
Menno suggested that PDM MKII is in the gap.

Going back to the analogy with MRP II, PDM MK II would address an activity at the departmental/functional level. Which department/function? Presumably Product Development.

Since the words behind the MRP acronym evolved from Material Requirements Planning to Manufacturing Resource Planning, the words behind the PDM acronym could evolve from Product Data Management to Product Development Management.

A glance at the first issue of 2PDM, the predecessor to 2PLM, shows that Product Data Management and Product Development Management were being addressed together in 1998.

A glance at the first issue of the Engineering Data Management Newsletter shows that, as long ago as 1991, Engineering Data Management systems allow companies to get control of all their engineering information, and to manage their overall, cross-functional engineering process. They provide a backbone for the controlled flow of engineering information throughout the product lifecycle.

* Time scale *
The time scale for the appearance of PDM, PDM MKII and PLM is:
  • 1980's : Product Data Management
  • 1990's : Product Development Management
  • 2000's : Product Lifecycle Management
Companies don't all pick up on new approaches at the same time. Different industries have different priorities, and there is a difference between thought-leaders, trend-setters and followers. At any time, the thought-leaders are outlining a vision, the trend-setters are taking the first steps to practical implementation of the vision, and the followers are struggling to come to terms with reality. This is true of any subject. In 1961, President Kennedy presented his vision of landing a man on the moon and returning him to Earth. It wasn't until 1969 that the vision became reality when Neil Armstrong returned after stepping on the moon.

In different decades, different companies in different industries have different priorities:
  • In the mid-1970's, leaders and trend-setters in discrete manufacturing industry were addressing the introduction of CAD.
  • By the mid-1980's, leaders and trend-setters were well into use of CAD, and were addressing the introduction of PDM.
  • By the mid-1990's, leaders and trend-setters were well into use of PDM, and were addressing the introduction of PDM MKII.
  • Today, leaders and trend-setters are well into PDM MK II, and are addressing the introduction of PLM. However, many followers are now at the stage of addressing the introduction of PDM, or of PDM MKII. And followers in traditional industries in developing countries may be at the stage of introducing CAD - which is now a commodity product selling for a few hundred or thousand dollars.
Implementation of PLM may be challenging. However, as President Truman put it, "If it's too hot in the kitchen, get out." Alternatively, why not, like Menno Huijben, join the PLM Interest Group. It provides a way for people interested in PDM, PDM MKII and PLM to work together to address problems of common interest. The annual membership fee for 2004 is low, just USD 470.20 or Euro 350.

Among the subjects that the PLMIG is currently addressing are a PLM Maturity Model and a definition of PLM. There is debate as to whether a definition of PLM would be either possible or useful. Some of the advantages were outlined by Ken Westray, President of NP Learning, Inc.
  • A definition provides direction as to where you are going. If you do not know where you are going, then how do you know you are getting there?
  • If the PLMIG does not define PLM, then someone else will. Then the organization will be led by someone else's definition. Vacuums will be filled.
  • The exercise of definition will, by itself, lead to greater clarity and insight. As a veteran marketing person I have learnt that less is more and more is less.
