* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. This week's article, "Using PLM for Reuse", is from Dana Nickerson of Convergence Data Services. But first, a quick update about the PLM Interest Group (PLMIG).

* PLM Interest Group *
The Charter meeting of the proposed PLM Interest Group was held on 25 November, 2003 in Frankfurt, Germany. The Group will start activities at the beginning of 2004. Join the PLMIG now. Benefit from its activities from January 1, 2004.

PLM is a strategic business activity that offers companies an opportunity to achieve competitive advantage. It is a newly-emerged approach to product development and support, bringing together PDM, CAD, Collaborative Product Development and many other systems, processes and techniques. It is complementary to SCM, CRM and ERP.

The PLM Interest Group is an industry-leading, independent, member-driven group, which aims to help its members succeed with PLM. Membership is open to all those interested in PLM - users, vendors, consultants, researchers, academics, etc.

The PLMIG has two categories of membership : Individual and Corporate.

Individual Memberhip includes the standard PLMIG services :
  • access to the PLMIG portal with case studies, forums, FAQs, etc.
  • subscription to the monthly Product Lifecycle Management Journal
  • site visits and PLMIG events
  • annual PLMIG Conference
Corporate Memberhip includes :
  • multiple Individual Memberships
  • the right to propose and lead joint PLMIG initiatives in areas such as PLM benchmarking, user/business benefits framework, metrics, standards, implementation guidelines, capability model, security, etc.
Other benefits of membership include :
  • make contacts and exchange information with other members
  • achieve PLM success faster
  • improve your company's understanding of PLM and its benefits
  • keep aware of leading PLM industry trends
  • expand industry relationships
  • get PLM know-how
  • use results of PLMIG activities to gain competitive advantage
For more details, contact the PLMIG.

* Using PLM for Reuse *
One of the buzzwords you hear a lot about with regards to PLM is "reuse". PLM systems are supposed to help designers and engineers reuse existing designs, components and products which have been used in previous designs and products. The case for reuse is that it will lower costs by being able to purchase large volumes of the same component. Reuse is also supposed to reduce time-to-market by reducing design time. Design costs are predicted to be lower by incorporating an existing design, saving the time of developing a new design. Most PLM systems offer some type of a "reuse manager" and are justified based on obtaining reuse benefits. So why aren't most companies realizing reuse benefits?

To be able to reuse something, you have to be able to find it. For most designers it's easier and faster to re-create something than it is to find it in the PLM system. For example, search for the word "bearing" in a typical PLM system. For most manufacturers, the search will result in thousands of hits. Searching through all these parts and drawings looking for the part that meets the requirements will take hours if not days. However, if the designer was able to find a bearing by specifying the ball diameter, inner race diameter, inside diameter, material, maximum revolutions per minute, outer race diameter, outside diameter, radial load, type or width characteristics, the probability of finding a match to the requirements would be much greater. The designer could find exactly what was needed.

To generate reuse benefits, designers and engineers must be able to quickly and easily find parts and components that meet their current requirements. This means that part characteristics normally captured on drawings, or in CAD models, must be available in the PLM system as searchable attributes. It is the only way that PLM systems will provide their promised reuse benefits.

Some companies are having great success reusing existing components by adding searchable attributes to their parts, components and products in their PLM systems. In some cases this has resulted in being able to find exactly what is needed in less than 5 seconds. When designers can find exactly what is needed in this time frame, they are much more likely to reuse than redesign, and the PLM system is used to its full potential.
