* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. This week's article "PLM Project Planning" is from Menno Huijben of Technia. But first, a few words about the PLM Forum to be held in Oxford, England later this month.

* PLM Forum *
In the April 8, 2002 issue of 2PLM we wrote about the main categories of PLM. We estimate the percentage contributions of these to PLM for a typical discrete manufacturing company to be:
  • EDM/PDM (20%)
  • CAD/CAM/CAE (20%)
  • Configuration Management (10%)
  • Collaboration software (5%)
  • Customer-oriented applications (10%)
  • Visualization/Viewing (5%)
  • Data exchange (5%)
  • Supplier-oriented applications (10%)
  • Process and project definition (5%)
  • Project management (5%)
  • Integrations (5%)
The exact percentage contributions will vary from one industry to another, and from one company to another, but the list shows that PLM is a very multi-dimensional business activity.

PLM isn't achieved by changing the D in PDM to an L. PDM is still Product Data Management, and it's just one component of PLM.

Developing a good description of PLM looks like being one of the first tasks of the PLM Interest Group. All members of the PLM community can work together in the Group to support the development and use of PLM.

So much interest has been shown in the Group that we will now be running two inaugural meetings. They will be in Oxford, England on September 23 and September 30. The two meetings, which will have identical formats, aim to generate a broad consensus of opinion about the role and structure of the PLM Interest Group.

In the morning, presentations will cover the background and set the scene. The afternoon will start with proposals for a Charter and implementation plan followed by an open forum debate. At the end of the day participants will receive a structured feedback pack which will be used to co-ordinate planning for the next stage.

For more details about the meetings, mail Roger Tempest.

* PLM Project Planning *
PLM implementations and their project plans. I wonder time and time again - why do these projects have such unrealistic time schedules?

Hans Christian Andersen wrote a nice fairytale about the Emperor's New Clothes. A vain ruler parading in a new set of clothes that only intelligent people can see, the unpardonably stupid cannot. A little child dares to observe that 'the emperor has nothing on at all'.

This story always comes to mind when discussing time schedules and milestones regarding PLM projects. Sometimes it feels that only intelligent people are able to see that the proposed time schedule for the project is feasible. I always wonder where is the little child who dares to say it is not.

There are a lot of stakeholders, interests and reputations involved when planning a PLM project. Look at the following relations :
  • customer to PLM provider : the customer believes that pushing the provider to deliver fixed price performance in two months will certainly ensure fast pay-back (but does it?)
  • PLM provider to customer : a provider who tells the customer up front about all the challenges of a typical PLM project will lose the deal, as the competing providers will be more 'intelligent'.
  • steering committee to project manager : undoubtedly a very intelligent committee member will say the project should be done in half the time
  • project manager to steering committee : the project manager does not want to look unintelligent (that is not good for the career)
  • and the PLM consultant? The consultant should be the little child from the fairytale. However, that is not always easy, especially when you are hired for your intelligence.
Even PLM projects that were delayed by a year (based on their intelligent time schedules) are still promoted as a success. In absolute terms, they may indeed have been a success, but why not acknowledge that the original time schedule was unrealistic? Nurture the lessons learned and do not repeat the same mistakes.

Our fairytale, at its end, also explains this behavior. When the knowledge of the lack of clothes spreads throughout the audience: 'The Emperor was vexed, for he knew that the people were right; but he thought the procession must go on now!'

PLM projects are real, not some fairytale. When planning a PLM project, do it based on facts and realistic assessments of the capability of all required resources. For example, ask yourself:
  • What is the capability of your organization to take PLM into use? - How much effort will you need for organizational change management, training and communication?
  • What is the quality of your product data? - How much effort will you need to improve the data quality and migrate legacy data?
  • How good is your Information Management organization? - Are all the support structures in place or do you need to develop them as you go?
  • How much real experience has your provider? - Do not only evaluate the PLM system, but also the provider's competence and expertise.
Finally, do invite the little child to give you an honest assessment of your project plan.

For questions and comments, please contact me by mail or call +358 424 722 1. In addition, we could meet at the PLM Forum in Oxford on September 23.

PRTM PLM Benchmarking Study
When fully implemented, PLM promises to provide an end-to-end solution for managing the information and decisions about a product or service from initial concept to retirement. However, realizing the full promise can be difficult. The complexity of PLM processes and systems can be daunting, and because of PLM's relative newness, no definitive benchmarking studies exist to provide a performance comparison. To capture PLM's real benefits, companies must first thoroughly assess and identify opportunities within their own critical operating and management processes, practices, and IT infrastructure.

To help you understand PLM and capture its benefits, PRTM invites you to participate in the 2003 PLM Benchmarking Study hosted by its benchmarking subsidiary, The Performance Measurement Group (PMG).
