Some of the definitions and explanations proposed seem to try to cover everything that could possibly be part of PLM and finish up being extremely long. Others just focus on one area (e.g. information management) and ignore the others - so are short but incomplete. To make things simple, let's just look at the three words in "Product Lifecycle Management". Surely they can only be interpreted in a maximum of two ways? Either it's the lifecycle of a product that is being managed, or it's the product that is being managed across its lifecycle? Actually it's both. Managing the product across its lifecycle Companies want to manage their products to maximize sales and minimize costs. To manage a product they have to know its lifecycle - so they have to manage the lifecycle as well. Product What does the "Product" in Product Lifecycle Management mean? Is it as specific as an individual product that a customer uses? Or is it more general - something like all the models in the company's product portfolio? On the assumption that we're going towards mass customization, and every product could be different, the "Product" in Product Lifecycle Management will have to refer to all the individual products the company produces - and all the groupings of products. Lifecycle What does the "Lifecycle" in Product Lifecycle Management mean? Does the lifecycle end when the product is "Obsolete" (the company is no longer actively manufacturing or selling the product) or with "End of Life" (the company no longer offers support for the product)? Or does it refer to the end of life of an individual product (which, for example, was recycled on 4 December 2002 and for which production started on 3 January 1995). Or did the life start when the customer requirements for that product model were identified on 2 July 1992? Or did it start even earlier when development of the motor used in that model started on 6 September 1988? Or did it start on 14 May 1986 when the cradle-to-grave lifecycle process used in the company was defined? On the assumption that we're going towards mass customization, in which every product could be different, the "Lifecycle" in Product Lifecycle Management could refer to any of the above - or even all of them. Maybe that doesn't actually make PLM much clearer, but it demonstrates that a full definition or explanation runs the risk of being extremely long. PLM is a new paradigm for manufacturing OED Online proposes various definitions and examples of the word "paradigm" such as :
