Here are answers to some questions that are often asked. Do different people mean different things when they talk/write about PLM? Yes, there are various meanings being associated with Product Lifecycle Management. We are using PLM in the broadest sense - the activity of managing a product throughout its lifecycle. This is sometimes referred to as the activity of managing a product from "cradle to grave" or from "sunrise to sunset". Not all organizations use this broad definition of PLM. Some define mini-PLMs which are about half the size of broad PLM and some define micro-PLMs which are about a quarter the size of broad PLM. People often tell us their vendors say that CAD is PLM, but we'd say CAD is a micro-PLM. It's just one component of broad PLM. CAD is Computer Aided Design. Nobody manages the lifecycle of a product with just a CAD system. We also hear people saying that CAD and PDM together are PLM, but we'd say CAD and PDM are a mini-PLM. Again, nobody manages a product across its lifecycle with just a CAD system and a PLM system. We estimated the 2002 PLM market size at $16.5 billion, up very slightly from $16 billion in 2001. One factor behind the low growth was the global economic situation which didn't encourage investment. Another was the lack of clarity in the market, which is at a turning point. With CAD becoming a commodity, users are reluctant to purchase high-end systems. With companies cutting back on discretionary spending, users are finding it difficult to justify the major system integration investments they often face with PDM. And with the dot-com bubble having burst, users are thinking twice about CPC and B2B. Nevertheless, the world moves forward and users want to progress. They ask what next?, where now? There's agreement on the answer. It's PLM. The confusion comes from the multiple definitions of PLM. Is ICP-35K an anti-American activity? No, it's a proposal for a Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) project funded by the European Commission with European taxpayer money. Regulation (EC) No 2321/2002 of 16 December 2002 describes the participation of undertakings, research centres and universities in the implementation of the European Community Sixth Framework Programme (2002-2006). To quote : "In conformity with the Sixth Framework Programme, the participation of legal entities from third countries should be envisaged, in line with the objectives of international cooperation, particularly as enshrined in Articles 164 and 170 of the Treaty." Among the participants in the ICP-35K proposal are IBM, PTC and Sun Microsystems. No, ICP-35K isn't an anti-American activity. In addition we propose participation in a related world-wide project. We are planning a similar initiative for PLM in the US. How can we cooperate? At the moment ICP-35K is still at the stage of a proposal, and we do not know if or when the project would start. PLM is a complex global issue, and it makes sense to cooperate. That's one of the main reasons we put together a large consortium of organizations. The aim is to help the implementation of PLM, not to hinder it, so we shouldn't divide resources and propose vendor-specific competing solutions. As mentioned above, there are many interpretations of PLM. It's important for us to understand what you mean by "PLM". For ICP-35K, we address all the product's lifecycle and have a top-down approach. If your approach focuses on existing product development applications and has a bottom-up approach, we could start by integrating the two approaches. |
