- Welcome Page 2 - Update Page 3 - News Page 4 - Brief lines | Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. * Update on ICP-35K * In the May 9 issue we wrote about the proposal for the "Implementing Collaborative Product Development and Product Lifecycle Management for 35,000 European Manufacturing Companies" project. We received feedback from people with a wide range of views about the project - and about Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). We've included some of their remarks below - and added a few comments. Confused I'm not sure what PLM is. Is it CAD? No. Is PLM the same as PDM? No. To find out more about PLM you can read Beth Stackpole's article There's a New App in Town in the May 15, 2003 issue of CIO Magazine. Hopeful Our IS VP wants to buy a system to solve PLM. What system do you recommend? Before you think about buying a system you need to have a very clear idea of what you're trying to do. You wouldn't ask this question if you understood what you're trying to do. Not very forthcoming We've implemented PLM. I don't see why you want to do this project. It's much easier to implement PLM for some products (e.g. safety matches) than for others. Traditionalist You can't implement PLM for 35,000 companies. Implementation of PLM is company-specific. You can only implement PLM for one company at a time. Why? Understanding The current mindset is that each user must have a different PLM implementation. I guess this project questions that. That's good. It makes sense to implement Collaborative Product Development collaboratively. Practical You'll need to do a thorough analysis of all those companies. You should involve PLM vendors in the project. Supportive Implementing PLM is tough. Any help you can provide would be appreciated by many people, certainly by me. Helpful Don't forget that implementing PLM isn't just about integrating different databases but also getting people in different businesses to work better together. Implementation of PLM isn't about engineering computer systems. It's a corporate management issue. One of the main problems we have in managing products across their lifecycles is that the Marketing VP blames Production for any customer problems with products, the Production VP blames Engineering for wrong specifications, and the Engineering VP blames Marketing for wrong requirements. I don't know how, but maybe you can address this type of problem in your project. Don't forget that PLM is primarily an activity and a set of processes, not an application. Profound This looks an appropriate subject for an international project. No manufacturing company could do it alone, no vendor could do it alone. Frustrated We couldn't get PLM to work in our company. People don't understand it, the systems don't fit, the data doesn't fit, the managers don't know what they want, the processes aren't defined. It would be great if you could just find out what those 35,000 companies really need. Innovator The WWW changed the way people worked. Maybe you can develop a PLM WWW? Pedantic Are there exactly 35,000 companies involved? Are these 35,000 companies all using the same systems? No, more. No. |
