* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PLM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis. This week's article is from Scott Cleveland.

* Product Lifecycle Management - Are We There Yet? *
Assume that product lifecycle management starts with an idea for a product and flows all the way through product end of life. That suggests that the people touched by such a system would include: your customers, your customer's customers, your company, your suppliers and your supplier's suppliers. Inside your company, PLM should touch sales, marketing, engineering, manufacturing, finance, human resources and so on.

Your Company..

There are many software suppliers that have written software focusing on the work done in a single department. Sales force automation software is directed at sales. Enterprise resource planning software companies do have several modules, most notably focused on finance and manufacturing. In every company, there are dozens of specialized areas like prototyping, quality assurance, field test, simulations, spare parts, customer support and etc. Each of these specialized areas has their own software tools - usually with some kind of database to store the results. Each specialized area is made up of people with different vocabularies that create different kinds of information, different kinds of documents and each discipline has differing standards that they must deal with.

If your company is small, you might get all departments to use the same software (this will be almost impossible with large companies) or you could integrate all of these systems together so that they can share information. What information will be shared with what other systems and when will it be shared? Will you go at the live system or will you share from a data warehouse? What about real time? Who controls the access list? What about security?

These are just a few issues; imagine the complexity when we open it up to customers, customer's customers, suppliers and supplier's suppliers.

Are We There Yet?
As you can see, it is not likely that any company has fully implemented product lifecycle management. Let's look at some of the issues.

Technology..

The technology is available today to connect up all of the data sources. There are Internets, Intranets and Extranets that allow us to go outside of our own four walls to create a solution. There are security offerings that will protect our environment. There are self-proclaimed PLM software suppliers. There are enterprise application integration software packages that allow us to connect our varied enterprise software applications. Moving information from one data source to another can be accomplished, though not necessarily easily.

Process..

You will need to define the entire product lifecycle. Within a single department it may be easy, but someone must put together the entire picture and arrive at an agreement as to the process. At least, when you have come to an agreement, there are several choices of business process automation software to make it work.

Cost..

Cost is a key reason that we don't see PLM fully implemented. The project is extremely large, spanning supplier(s), your company and your customer(s). The project gets slowed by issues like: project definition, data gathering, process definition, corporate politics, culture change, solution definition, sabotage from a disgruntled employee and etc. Probably the biggest killer of success is scope creep, usually caused by your own people wanting more, making changes and etc.

If it is so expensive, why do it?

The return on investment is there: Customer input into product design early aids customer satisfaction and identifies the demand; Changes to products as they are being manufactured are much more expensive than changes at the design stage; Good communications with suppliers can hold down costs and make parts available; and many more.

If you are to compete in this economy, this could be how you will succeed.
