* CPC/PLM *
Last week we were invited to visit a company to discuss their 5-year forward-looking product development strategy. We asked for some background information before the meeting so that we could prepare a presentation, but they said that wasn't necessary as they didn't want to see any more PowerPoint or Flash presentations. When we got there we met the Director of Strategy and Planning, a VP Products, and a VP Marketing.
The Director of Strategy and Planning said, "this is like a beauty contest - we're checking out consultants to see who we can work with. First of all we want to find out if you see the world the way we do. We'd like you to suggest ten reasons we can present to our boss in support of the CPC/PLM strategy we're going to implement in January. If we're in concordance we'll want to talk more."
The human brain has amazing powers, it's amazing how it can simultaneously ask what CPC/PLM means, wonder what a Director of Strategy and Planning thinks CPC/PLM means, create a list of reasons for implementing CPC/PLM, make sure there's something for everyone on the list, prioritize the reasons, recall similar 'beauty contests' and manage an intelligent conversation.
The list had to be written on one page of a flipchart. At the end of the meeting the Director of Strategy and Planning tore off the page, folded it up and put it in his folder. From memory, it must have been something like the following. We've added a few comments to each point - they were slipped into the conversation and weren't on the flip.
CPC/PLM enables businesses to cut costs and enhance shareholder value
Cutting costs and increasing shareholder value are the hot buttons for business leaders driving for market-leading paradigms in the new millennium. Quality, security, customer focus, a stable qualified workforce, .... those were yesteryear's buzzwords.
CPC/PLM provides the technological and organizational infrastructure to support corporate objectives of increased outsourcing in a global environment
To cut costs, business leaders want to shift work offshore to low-wage, low social cost countries, but know that won't work without supporting technology and new working structures and methods.
CPC/PLM provides the infrastructure for effective product innovation
Corporate leaders are frustrated by the low level of innovation in their companies. They know they need to turn on new revenue streams before pension fund managers call for their heads.
CPC/PLM enables faster NPI ramping
Corporate leaders are frustrated by lengthy New Product Introduction cycles. They want to ramp faster - and count revenues sooner.
CPC/PLM provides total control of products throughout the total product life cycle
Executives want more control of products from initial planning and concepts to final phase out and recycling
CPC/PLM enables overhead cost reduction and reduction of Product Development efforts
Executives want to cut costs out of Product Development. Executives want to slash Product Development cycle time.
CPC/PLM integrates the flow of product information throughout the supply chain
Executives want to reduce data translation time, review time and rework in the supply chain. They want to collaboratively work with suppliers in a DAMA (Develop Anywhere Manufacture Anywhere) environment. They want to minimize Mass Customization Order Entry and Engineering Change time, effort and cost.
CPC/PLM gets everyone in the supply chain working together for the best possible product
While design engineers in Detroit are sleeping, manufacturing engineers in China are reviewing their designs and eliminating potential faults, and market specialists in Germany are ensuring that global customer requirements are met.
CPC/PLM provides the benefits of the most modern IS technology
IS VP's want to take advantage of new easy-to-implement, easy-to-use, new-generation technology and benefit from the latest possibilities provided by the World Wide Web and Java.
CPC/PLM improves system interoperability and drives down IS costs
IS VP's looking to integrate applications appreciate the way CPC/PLM brings it all together - it's not just another point solution like CAD.
CPC/PLM seamlessly extends CAD/PDM and ERP/B2B visions and strategies
Business leaders like to see continuity and coherence as legacy approaches such as CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM and ERP/B2B meld with future-oriented proposals for CPC/PLM.
When we'd finished, the Director of Strategy and Planning said, "Oh, this is great, this is great, it's exactly what we need." The VP Products liked the increased innovation and reduced waste. The VP Marketing said "we sure need to ramp NPI faster". The Director of Strategy and Planning said, "We still have to run some other beauty contests but this is great. We'll need to look at cost-justification of the CPC/PLM project next, and then plan the CPC/PLM project implementation phasing. Could you help with that?"
Sure. And we showed him the presentation.
