* When KM meets PDM *
The article in this issue looks at what happens when Knowledge Management meets Product Data Management.

When KM and PDM meet, the result will depend on parameters such as their objectives, which direction they are coming from and their momentum.

The objectives of PDM are to:
  • Reduce the time to introduce new products, and the cost of developing them
  • Reduce the cost of new products, and improve the quality of products and services
  • Reduce engineering change time, reduce the number of engineering changes
  • Significantly impact a company's ability to compete, its market share and its revenues
PDM comes from the Product Development and Engineering parts of a company. Its roots go back to the early 1980's. The mainstream PDM market grows steadily but slowly, perhaps because it has problems with several issues:
  • Implementation of PDM requires an enormous amount of discipline and detail. Many product developers and engineers find this alien to their way of working. For example a recent implementation was held up for a month because a dash (-) had been written as an underscore (_).
  • While it's easy to build a database of legacy drawings and parts it's much more difficult to maintain an up-to-date database of living, changing products. Many product developers and engineers find the change processes of PDM systems alien to their way of thinking, so make changes outside the system with the result that the database no longer reflects reality.
  • Customization of many PDM systems is expensive and slow. No sooner is it finished than a new version appears and the customization has to start again.
  • Most PDM systems claim functionality for Product Structure Management but do not venture into Configuration Management which would seem an obvious function for a true PDM system.
  • Most PDM systems have little Engineering Workflow Management functionality apart from simple release management and change management - although improved workflow management is one of the fastest ways to improve product development performance. Product data flows along the engineering workflow, so Engineering Workflow Management would seem an obvious function for a true PDM system.
  • In most companies, management's desire for PDM lags far behind its desire for ERP.
Among the many application areas that the Knowledge Management community brings to the meeting with PDM are:
  • Customer Knowledge Management - using knowledge about customers to provide customized product information or customized service information
  • Knowledge Data Bases - containing experience of best practices across a wide range of industries
  • Knowledge Retention Systems - conserving knowledge of how people work in different activities
  • Virtual Educational Organizations - enabling rapid education and training at the knowledge consumer's workplace
How will PDM vendors react to the opportunities that arise when KM meets PDM? Those who have seen vendors react to e-commerce, collaborative engineering and the Internet by adding 'e', 'c' or 'i' to the product name without adding new functionality, may expect to see PDM vendors adding a 'k' without adding new functionality.

On the other hand, PDM vendors may use KM to address some of the weaknesses in their products and services with applications in the areas of:
  • Sales force support - enabling more knowledgeable PDM salespeople
  • Customer support - useful customer-specific support rather than vague broad-brush mailings
  • Field support - fixing all those bugs ten times faster and making sure they don't reappear in the next release
  • Engineering workflow functionality
  • Engineering process improvement - through product development best practices
  • Technology know-how
  • Configuration Management
  • PDM system implementation expertise - a priority area to address as many PDM vendors give the impression they don't know how their own system should be implemented
  • PDM system usability improvement - to help users who find PDM functions difficult to use
All that may be for the future. For the present, if you know of any useful Web sources of information about how KM is being applied to PDM, please send in the URLs and we'll list them in the next issue.
